The American School of Madrid is a mirage of a good school, rather than a welcoming and safe learning environment. Although at first giving the impression of a modern, clean and effiecient school, the multi million dollar facilities don’t make up for the poor education that students receive. For my first year in high school at ASM, 80% of my teachers were incredibly demotivating, and provided little to no positive learning experiences. In class, many would simply avoid questions, or show visual frustration if they acknowledged them. As well as this, there is little to no coordination between teachers surrounding work loads; I would often spend hours per night doing monotonous, often pointless homework assignments, or leftover class work because of bad planning on the teachers part. Some teachers seemed complete unfit to teach their assigned subjects, at times making offensive, borderline xenophobic remarks. As well as this, the school has a notorious reputation among students as being terrible at dealing with ‘controversies’ and ‘drama.’ The school often employs ineffective or disproportionate punishment to solve situations. I am happy to have recently moved schools; my mood, my work quality and general health has improved drastically. If the school does not listen to the opinions of the students, the future seems quite dark for the lancers.
