International Schools in Hong Kong

There are around 70 international schools in Hong Kong, roughly a third of these are British and most offer the International Baccalaureate. Read on to find out what the areas of Hong Kong are like and the ranking of the best schools.

History

Hong Kong, also known as the Pearl of the Orient, has an interesting history dating back as far as the Stone Age.  In the 7th century the deep natural harbour became a popular port with trading ships travelling the Silk Road between Asia, Africa and the Middle East.  The Europeans traded peacefully with the Chinese from the 16th  century until the Opium wars in the 19th century.  In the mid 19th century to assure peace, China handed over Hong Kong Island and then Kowloon to the British, who then leased the New Territories for 99 years.  That lease expired in 1997 and the whole of Hong Kong was returned to Chinese rule.  Under the Sino-British declaration, Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, able to retain its freedoms and way of life for 50 years post handover.

Modern Day Hong Kong

Hong Kong, known as the city that never sleeps, is one of the most fast paced, vibrant places on earth.  In spite of this Hong Kong is a safe and   friendly place where children are treated with kindness.  Public transport is good with buses, trams, the Star Ferry and cheap taxis.  Street signs are all written in English and Traditional Chinese but the majority of residents speak Cantonese or Mandarin.  English speakers are a small minority so knowing a little Mandarin can be really helpful and appreciated by locals.

With an estimated population of around 7.5 million crammed into a relatively small urban area, space is at a premium.  There is no more space to build outwards, so buildings have become high rise.  This means that if you want to live in or close to the city centre you will pay a relatively high price for a very compact living space.  Most of the family friendly accommodation is a little way out of the city but often commutable in 10-15 minutes.

Green Space

In spite of its crowded, built up, urban area, there plenty of playgrounds, parks and green spaces.  In fact, Hong Kong is mostly made up of country parks with excellent walking and running trails.  There are also many beautiful beaches, where you can swim, surf or hire a junk all year round and a variety of clubs with swimming pools and sporting facilities.

Where to live

Hong Kong Island

The side of the island is popular with expat families who still want to be close to the city.

Stanley

Stanley is a laid back, but very popular (especially at weekends), seaside village with a famous market and an excellent selection of cafés, restaurants and shops around 30 minutes from the city.

Pok Fu Lam

Pok Fu Lam, home to Hong Kong University, is a shorter commute into the city (around 20 minutes) and has spectacular sea views.  Apartments here are more spacious than in the city and some lead directly onto the 270 hectare Pok Fu Lam Country Park with trails leading up to the The Peak and linking up with the Hong Kong Trail which goes all the way to Big Wave Bay Beach.

The Peak

The Peak is a wealthy, exclusive, green, peaceful, secluded area with stunning views around 10 minutes away from central Hong Kong.  Some of the most luxurious houses are located here.  It is the coolest place to live in Hong Kong but sometimes shrouded in mist or fog.

New Territories

The New Territories is a vast, predominantly rural, area between mainland China and Kowloon with nature reserves, historic villages, ancient temples and sandy beaches.

Lantau Island

In spite of being home to Hong Kong Disneyland and Hong Kong International Airport, Lantau Island is covered in stunning national parks and a safe, clean and quiet environment.  The car free Discovery Bay is one of the most popular areas with expat families.  Accomodation here is low rise, spacious and often with gardens and only 30 minutes by fast ferry to central Hong Kong.  The villages of South Lantau,  are also popular due to their spacious accommodation surrounded by jungle and natural beaches.

Sai Kung

The town of Sai Kung is friendly, former fishing village on the edge of the Sai Kung peninsula and vast country park.  It is a beautiful, natural area with several UNESCO sites, beautiful beaches and clean, fresh air.  The town itself has a huge selection of shops, cafés, family friendly restaurants and spacious family housing.  The commute from here into central Hong Kong takes around 40 minutes to an hour.

Clear Water Bay

Clear Water Bay is a beautiful sandy bay surrounded by protected jungle dotted with many little villages, each with its own character.  It is a friendly, tranquil area with spacious family housing, fresh air, stunning views and around 45 minutes to an hour commute into central Hong Kong.

Since 1994, Kingston has dedicated itself to the worthy pursuit of equipping students to be proficient in two of the most significant languages of the twenty-first century: English and Chinese (Putonghua). For over 20 years, Kingston has successfully provided a challenging and stimulating environment that nurtures the balanced development of students who, in their own unique way, grow into active and responsible world citizens. We are proud to have been the first school in Hong Kong to be authorized to provide the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. The IBPYP provides a unique framework for approaches to learning. The flexibility of the IBO framework has ensured that Kingston has been able to maintain its dedication to bilingualism while ensuring international standards of English, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Science, Arts and Physical Education and providing an excellent environment for Chinese language development. Members of the community who take the opportunity to walk the halls and visit the classrooms of Kingston often comment on the fluidity with which our students switch between Putonghua and English. This is a point of particular pride for us. While many schools view languages as subjects, we take particular pride in having two living languages at Kingston. Kingston teachers come from all over the globe and they bring with them a wide variety of experiences. Varied experiences and points of view are valued within the IB approaches to learning, as is lifelong learning. Our dedication to teacher professional development is unsurpassed and makes Kingston an attractive option for teachers who want to work at a school where training and experience results in a mature programme with a deep understanding of the IBPYP framework and the most innovative, successful, child-centred educational programme ever developed.

Our students travel from a wide variety of residential areas of Hong Kong to enjoy our spacious, well equipped campus on the edge of a large country  park in Tai Po district, New Territories, Hong Kong. The Japanese International School, Hong Kong (International Section) was described by a HK education journalist as The holy grail of international primary schools in Hong Kong (2016). Striking a balance between tradition and innovation, between East and West, The ISF Academy is a connected community of learners that is based on a vision of education where the power of ideas to shape lives is understood and respected, and where hope for a better, brighter future forms an essential driving force for learning. We believe that an excellent education reaches both the heart and the head, combining challenges and inspiration, offering a rich experience of the real world balanced with the security of a planned learning environment. Great learning charts the journey between aspiration and achievement, instills values and virtues, inspires courage and commitment, and draws wisdom from experience. An ISF education values, nurtures, and celebrates the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the human experience. ISF Academy students learn to embrace and exemplify the essential human values that form the philosophical foundation of our school: commitment, respect, benevolence, compassion, courtesy, integrity, harmony, balance and wisdom; these are the Eight Virtues + One. Our students and teachers put these values into practice each day, shaping our school culture, our personal interactions, our decisions and ideas. They are inquisitive about the world around them and their study programs are designed to encourage exploration, analysis, and reflection. ISF Academy students learn about our world from many different perspectives, and through a range of technologies, they gain not just knowledge, but also a practical framework of human values deeply rooted in Chinese culture. As the builders and shapers of tomorrow, our students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to make their own contribution to an interconnected global community. They speak more than one language, embrace technology, and move freely in both Chinese and Western cultural contexts. They are accomplished communicators whose voices are heard in our school and the community beyond, as observers, contributors, and leaders. They are also tolerant, kind, and loyal. The ISF Academy has a strong, future focused vision of education that is well grounded in traditional Chinese cultural values, where the world is a classroom, and learning is not constrained by differences of language and culture. The global perspective of each learner is also shaped by our unique curriculum, based on the solid foundation of the IB Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme and enhanced by our ISF ShuyuanClassics and Sciences courses. Experiential learning provides an essential 'real world' counterpoint to our demanding academic courses. Our commitment to The ISF Academy community is to work in partnership with each family to develop the individual potential of each child, to share the journey with its trials and challenges, and turn today's dreams into tomorrow's achievements.

DESCRIPTION

KIS’s origin can be traced back to Saturday School, started in 1960 with just 6 students to provide for the needs of Korean community in Hong Kong. An increasingly larger community’s needs and support from Korean government was instrumental in securing and establishing KIS at Sai Wan Ho and today, we are indeed proud to serve KIS which not only cater for Korean community’s needs, but also welcome an international body of students from over 25 countries. Full stream Korean Section and International School have grown over the years, and whilst KIS suffered ups and downs with the fortune of Hong Kong itself, we are now on firm grounds to continue to grow with completion in 2013 of second extension to existing buildings that will allow us to offer more classrooms and facilities to meet increasing demand for international education. We believe firmly in providing a secure and stable environment in which students from all backgrounds can grow, work and play together while in Hong Kong, so that they can go anywhere in the world with full confidence. We hope that the special environment at KIS, where two curriculums coexist side by side, whilst challenging, will provide extra stimulation and motivation.
