How would you rate International School of Bucharest (ISB)?
A great international school in Bucharest. Probably one of the few real international schools in the city. Great students, teachers and staff. The facilities are very good but need an upgrade. I would definitely choose this school for my second child.
Teachers in early and primary school behaving like they never attended any form of education, screaming and treating kids unprofessionally. Heaving "preferred" students, most of the time kids of their fellow teachers. Missing classes and leaving assistant teachers to fill their roles. Nothing is changing, even after complaining to the primary school head, because teachers are always right, they never did or said anything they are accused of. Lies and screaming about and to the children is a practice. Academic assessments are a joke; copy and paste almost all the time for all the kids. There is no real communication with the parents; don’t be fooled by advertising when you first talk with the head of primary. Each year, there are parents choosing a different school because of the behavioural problems of some of the primary teachers.
The atmosphere in ISB is marked by lack of interest/boredom and/or distrust. Most staff members are Turkish or Romanian nationals, which is not bad per se, except almost all of those are very narrow-minded and have limited or no real international experience. Most of them have no pedagogical skills, they simply follow the old ways of treating students like empty vessels to be filled with tons of knowledge. The only attitude they tolerate is submission. This is obvious when one reads the reviews on the school's website and can easily notice many Turkish names. The best reviews come from staff members, what does that say about the school? However good their advertising is, it's nothing more than empty promises that sound very nice and catchy. The nicer, the more empty. Such a shame! It used to be a really decent school a few years ago.
What this school offers is very costly instruction, not education. It is really quite disappointing, the reality does not match their rhetoric, the teachers, with very few exceptions, are plain, stiff and boring, the vast majority of students, especially the local ones, are just spoiled brats and a bad influence for those who come from different backgrounds. A very rigid "Eurasia meets the Balkans" kind of a school that only mimics the Western standards of education.
