Working out international school fees in Muscat is more straightforward than in Dubai or Doha, because the market is smaller and the price bands are clearer. Even so, the headline tuition figure rarely tells the whole story. This guide sets out what families actually pay in the 2026-27 school year, in Omani rials, and lists the extras that need to sit in your budget alongside tuition. Why Muscat sits in the middle of the Gulf price range

Muscat is neither the cheapest nor the most expensive Gulf capital for international schooling. Fees are lower than Dubai and Abu Dhabi for a comparable British or American education, roughly in line with Doha, and slightly above Manama. Two things keep prices in check. First, the Ministry of Education must approve fee increases at licensed private schools, which limits sudden jumps. Second, the expatriate population is smaller and more stable than in the UAE, so schools compete on reputation rather than on marketing spend.

Geography matters for cost too. Most established international schools sit along the Madinat Al Ilam, Al Khuwair, Bausher and Ghala corridor, with newer campuses further out towards Al Mouj and the airport. Living close to your school saves both bus fees and the daily traffic on Sultan Qaboos Street, which is a real consideration if you are choosing between two similar options.

Curricula available and what they cost

• British (Cambridge or Pearson, IGCSE and A Level): the largest group, from Omani-run English-medium schools at OMR 1,500 to 3,500 up to the flagship expatriate schools at OMR 4,000 to 9,500.

The school is a not-for-profit foundation, which is one reason increases have been modest.

The American International School of Muscat

Known locally as TAISM, this non-profit school in Ghala runs a US curriculum with the IB Diploma in grades 11 and 12. Tuition sits roughly between OMR 5,000 and OMR 10,000 depending on grade, and there is a capital levy for new families. It has the strongest facilities of any Muscat school, including a large performing arts centre.

ABA Oman International School

A three-programme IB school in Madinat Al Ilam and the natural choice for families who want IB continuity from age 3 to 18. Fees are broadly comparable with TAISM, roughly OMR 5,000 to 9,500, with an enrolment fee that is higher than at the British schools.

Cheltenham Muscat

The Omani campus of the English independent school, opened in 2023 in Al Mouj. It follows the English National Curriculum through to A Level. As a newer school it has priced slightly under British School Muscat to build enrolment, roughly OMR 3,800 to 8,500, and offers sibling discounts.

Downe House Muscat

A girls-only British school affiliated with Downe House in Berkshire, opened in 2022. Fees are in a similar band to Cheltenham, roughly OMR 4,000 to 8,500. It is the only single-sex international option in the city, which some families specifically want for secondary.

Fee ranges by stage for 2026-27

Across the established expatriate schools, the typical pattern looks like this: Foundation and Key Stage 1 (ages 3 to 7) roughly OMR 3,500 to 5,500; upper primary (ages 7 to 11) roughly OMR 4,500 to 6,500; lower secondary and IGCSE (ages 11 to 16) roughly OMR 6,000 to 8,500; A Level or IB Diploma (ages 16 to 18) roughly OMR 8,000 to 10,000. Omani-owned schools teaching in English charge between a third and a half of these figures.

The extras that families most often forget: a registration or application fee of OMR 50 to 300, non-refundable; a refundable deposit of one term to one full year of tuition at some schools; an enrolment or capital fee of OMR 500 to 2,000 at the American and IB schools; uniforms at roughly OMR 150 to 300 per child per year; school transport at OMR 500 to 900 a year depending on distance; and external exam fees for IGCSE, A Level or IB of roughly OMR 300 to 700 in exam years. School lunches, residential trips and after-school activities are almost always billed separately.

One hard number to keep in mind: Oman applies a 5 percent VAT to most goods and services since April 2021, but education delivered by licensed schools is exempt. Your tuition invoice should therefore show no VAT line. If a school quotes you a figure "plus VAT" for tuition, ask why.

Practical advice for Muscat families

Negotiate the package, not the fee. Muscat schools rarely discount tuition, but they do offer sibling reductions, waive registration fees for corporate partners, and sometimes reduce the deposit for families arriving mid-year. Ask what is available rather than asking for a lower price.

Check the mid-year entry rules. Many families move to Oman in January for oil and gas rotations. Most schools pro-rate tuition by term, but some charge the full annual enrolment fee regardless of start date, which changes the real cost of a mid-year move.

Read the withdrawal clause before you pay the deposit. Notice periods of one full term are standard, and deposits are typically forfeited if notice is short. Expatriate contracts end unexpectedly, so this clause matters more in Muscat than in many cities.
