How to Choose an International School in Jeddah: 2026 Family Guide

Quick answer: How do you choose an international school in Jeddah? Start with the curriculum your child will exit on, since Jeddah offers British, American, French and IB routes in parallel. Then narrow by district, because most campuses sit in north Jeddah between Al Hamra and Obhur. Budget roughly SAR 25,000 to 90,000 a year and ask each school how VAT appears on your invoice.

Jeddah has been a port city for as long as anyone has been counting, and its schools reflect that. Within a few kilometres of each other you will find British, American, French and IB campuses, each with an established community and a different sense of what a good education looks like. Choosing an international school in Jeddah is mostly a question of deciding which of those worlds you want your child to grow up inside.

The market has also changed more than most families realise. Saudi nationals were historically restricted from attending international schools, and the Ministry of Education opened that door towards the end of the last decade. The result is a genuinely mixed intake at many campuses, which most expatriate families count as a benefit and which has tightened competition for places at the better known schools.

Here is how to work through the decision without wasting a term on it.

Start with the exit qualification, not the campus

It is tempting to tour schools first and think about curriculum later. In Jeddah that is the wrong order, because the four main systems here lead to genuinely different places and switching between them mid secondary is painful.

The British route runs IGCSE then A Levels, and suits families likely to move to the UK, the Gulf or Commonwealth universities. The American route leads to a high school diploma with AP options, and is the smoother path to North American admissions. The French system, served by a dedicated campus, follows the national programme to the baccalaureate and works if you are in the francophone network. The IB Diploma is the most portable if you do not yet know where you will be in five years.

Decide this first, then look at the three or four campuses that offer it. Your shortlist just got manageable.

Then narrow by district

Almost all of Jeddah's international provision sits in the northern half of the city. Al Hamra and Ash Shati, along the corniche, hold several established campuses and a good deal of the expatriate housing. Al Rawdah and Al Zahra, slightly inland, offer more family housing at lower rents and remain within a reasonable school run.

Obhur, further north along the coast, has grown quickly and now has its own compound community. It is pleasant, and the commute south into the city at peak hour is the trade off.

The historic Al Balad district is extraordinary and worth your weekends, but nobody schools their children from there. Plan your housing around the campus rather than the other way round, because in Jeddah the school run defines the day more than the office does.

Questions that separate good campuses from average ones

  • What is the teacher retention rate at the start of this academic year, not the average over five
  • How large are the classes in the examination years, which is where budgets show
  • What Arabic provision exists for a non Arabic speaking child, and is it streamed
  • What learning support is available and is it charged separately
  • Where did last year's leavers go, by university and country rather than by headline name
  • How does VAT appear on the invoice, since the rate rose to 15 per cent in July 2020 and treatment varies

Five Jeddah campuses worth a visit

Daraah International School, SEK Education Group

Part of the Spanish SEK group, which brings an international network behind a Jeddah campus. Worth seeing if you want an IB oriented environment with a European institutional culture rather than a British or American one. See the Daraah International School, SEK Education Group profile on International School Advisor.

British International School of Jeddah

The established British curriculum option in the city, running IGCSE and post sixteen provision. Ask about A Level subject breadth, which is the practical constraint at British schools of this size. See the British International School of Jeddah profile on International School Advisor.

American International School of Jeddah

The main North American pathway in Jeddah, with a high school diploma and AP provision. Relevant if your child is already in a US system and you want to avoid a curriculum change mid secondary. See the American International School of Jeddah profile on International School Advisor.

Ecole Francaise Internationale de Jeddah

The French system campus, following the national programme. The obvious choice for francophone families, and worth a look for anyone who wants genuine French language immersion rather than French as a subject. See the Ecole Francaise Internationale de Jeddah profile on International School Advisor.

Al Waha International School

A smaller setting than the big three, which suits some children considerably better. Visit on an ordinary school day and watch how staff handle the corridors between lessons. See the Al Waha International School profile on International School Advisor.

What Jeddah schools cost in 2026

Jeddah is more affordable than Riyadh for comparable provision and considerably cheaper than Dubai. Annual tuition in Saudi riyals runs roughly as follows at the schools a relocating family would consider.

Primary sits around SAR 25,000 to 55,000. Secondary runs roughly SAR 40,000 to 90,000, with the established British and American campuses at the upper end and the French system generally lower. Early years provision typically starts around SAR 20,000. Many employers in Jeddah still include a schooling allowance in expatriate packages, so establish what yours covers before you shortlist, since it may quietly decide the question for you.

  • Registration and assessment fee, usually not refundable
  • Seat deposit, credited against the first term invoice
  • Bus, priced by zone and worth confirming from your specific compound
  • Uniform, books and devices, billed annually
  • Examination entry for IGCSE, A Level or AP, often quoted in pounds or dollars
  • Value added tax, at 15 per cent since July 2020, with treatment differing between schools and nationalities

Three things to get right before you sign

Confirm the allowance in writing. Schooling allowances in Jeddah packages are often quoted per child up to a cap, sometimes excluding registration, bus and examination fees. The gap between what the package covers and what the school invoices is where families get caught, and it is usually four figures.

Ask about Arabic before you assume it is optional. Arabic is part of the curriculum requirement and how schools handle a non Arabic speaking newcomer varies widely. Some stream properly, some place a twelve year old beginner alongside native speakers. It makes a real difference to how your child feels about school by December.

Visit at pick up time. Ten minutes watching how a Jeddah campus handles the end of the day tells you more about its organisation than an hour in the head teacher's office. Traffic management, staff presence and how children behave while they wait are all visible in that window.

Frequently asked questions

Can Saudi nationals attend international schools in Jeddah?

Yes. The Ministry of Education opened international schools to Saudi students towards the end of the last decade, reversing a long standing restriction. The practical effect for relocating families is a more mixed intake at most campuses and stronger competition for places at the best known schools.

Which district should we live in for schools in Jeddah?

North Jeddah, in practice. Al Hamra and Ash Shati along the corniche hold several established campuses and much of the expatriate housing. Al Rawdah and Al Zahra offer more space slightly inland. Obhur is pleasant and further out, so price the commute honestly before choosing it.

Do we pay VAT on school fees in Jeddah?

It depends on the school and on your status. Value added tax has been 15 per cent since July 2020 and treatment of private education differs by case. Ask each school for a sample invoice showing exactly how tax appears, rather than relying on the headline fee published on the website.
