International school admissions in Jeddah have become more competitive and more regulated since 2023, as Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 reforms have brought a wave of new residents to the kingdom's commercial capital and the Ministry of Education has tightened oversight of private and international schools. Families arriving for the Red Sea and NEOM projects, for the port and logistics sector, or for the many multinationals with regional offices in Jeddah find that the best known schools fill their early primary and secondary entry years months in advance. This guide explains the admissions calendar, the residency documents Saudi schools require, the assessments used, the fees charged at each stage, and how to secure a place in the school you actually want.

Why Jeddah admissions have tightened

Jeddah has around four million residents and a large, long established expatriate community, historically concentrated in the north of the city in districts such as Al Rawdah, Al Shati, Al Basateen and the compounds along the Corniche and towards Obhur. Since 2022 the flow of skilled migrants has increased sharply, and international schools have expanded but not fast enough. The result is waiting lists at the most sought after schools in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 9, and a growing number of families accepting a second choice for the first year while they wait.

At the same time the Ministry of Education now requires international schools to verify residency status before enrolment and to register every student on the national Noor system, which means paperwork that used to be handled informally is now a hard prerequisite. International schools in Jeddah and how their admissions work

Daraah International School (SEK Education Group)

Daraah is the Jeddah campus of the Spanish SEK Education Group, an IB World School network with more than 130 years of history, and one of the newer international options in the city. It offers the IB continuum with a strong Arabic and Islamic studies programme for Saudi students and English medium instruction throughout. Admissions are rolling, with a family interview and age appropriate assessment, and because the school is still growing it often has places in year groups where the older schools are full. Fees are roughly SAR 45,000 to SAR 75,000 depending on grade.

British International School of Jeddah

The long established British school, following the English National Curriculum to IGCSE and A Level on a large campus in the north of the city. Admissions open in the autumn for the following August, with English and mathematics assessments from Year 3 and a waiting list in most primary years. Fees run roughly SAR 55,000 to SAR 95,000 a year.

American International School of Jeddah

AISJ offers a US curriculum with AP courses and the IB Diploma, and is the default for American and many other expatriate families. Admissions require two years of reports, a teacher recommendation and MAP or equivalent testing for older students. Fees are roughly SAR 60,000 to SAR 100,000, the highest in the city, plus a capital fee.

Jeddah Prep and Grammar School

A British curriculum school with a smaller, community feel, offering IGCSE and A Levels. Admissions are rolling with an assessment day for secondary applicants, and the school is often a realistic option for families who arrive mid year. Fees are roughly SAR 40,000 to SAR 70,000.

École Française Internationale de Jeddah

The French system school, part of the AEFE network, following the French national programme from maternelle to the baccalauréat. Admissions follow the French academic calendar with priority for French nationals; other francophone children are admitted where places exist. Fees are roughly SAR 30,000 to SAR 50,000, the lowest in this list.

The admissions timeline, documents and fees

• Enquiry and application: from September for August entry; application fee of SAR 500 to SAR 1,500, non refundable.
• Residency documents: copies of the sponsoring parent's iqama (residence permit) and the child's iqama or dependent visa; schools cannot complete enrolment on the Noor system without them, though most will hold a place on a passport copy while the iqama is processed.
• Academic documents: two years of school reports, a transfer certificate from the previous school, and for Saudi and Arab students an attested equivalence letter for foreign qualifications.
• Health records: immunisation certificate and a medical form; some schools require a Saudi medical check.
• Assessment: play based observation under 6; English and mathematics tests from about age 7; MAP or CAT4 testing at some American and British schools for Grade 6 and above.
• Offer and acceptance: within two to four weeks; registration or capital fee of SAR 5,000 to SAR 15,000 and at some schools a refundable deposit of one term.
• Tuition: roughly SAR 30,000 to SAR 100,000 a year depending on school and grade, usually invoiced per term or semester.

A tax point that affects every family in Jeddah: Saudi Arabia's Value Added Tax rate has been 15 percent since July 2020, and private education services are not exempt. Saudi citizens are shielded because the government pays the VAT on tuition for citizens at licensed private and international schools, but non Saudi families pay the full 15 percent on top of the quoted fee unless the school states that its prices are VAT inclusive. On a SAR 80,000 fee, that is SAR 12,000 a year. Always ask whether fees are quoted before or after VAT.

Practical advice for securing a place in Jeddah

Start before the iqama arrives. Schools understand that residency permits take weeks after arrival. Apply with passport copies and the employer's visa letter, complete assessments, and provide the iqama as soon as it is issued. Waiting until the paperwork is complete often means missing the year group you wanted.

Apply to a newer school as well as an established one. Schools that have opened or expanded since 2020, including the SEK campus, frequently have places in year groups where the older schools have waiting lists, and they offer comparable curricula and facilities.

Read the employer's education allowance carefully. Many Jeddah packages cap tuition support per child and exclude capital fees, VAT and transport. Knowing the cap before you shortlist avoids choosing a school whose fees leave you paying a large gap yourself.
