Best International Schools in Suzhou: 2026 Guide for Families

What are the best international schools in Suzhou? Suzhou has roughly seven schools for expatriate children in our directory. Dulwich College Suzhou (British curriculum, ages 2 to 18) and EtonHouse International School (IB, ages 2 to 18) lead for most families, with Nord Anglia and Canadian International School Kunshan as alternatives. Indicative annual fees run roughly RMB 85,000 to 170,000, so ask each school for its schedule.

Choosing among the best international schools in Suzhou is less about league tables than about eligibility, curriculum and which side of a large city you will live on. Suzhou is the canal city inland from Shanghai, but it is also a manufacturing and technology hub with a large foreign workforce, which is why it supports a handful of established schools from nursery to university entry.

This guide explains who can actually enrol, what each school teaches, what fees look like and how to match a school to your child. It avoids naming a single winner, because the right answer for a three-year posting differs from the right answer for a family planning to stay a decade.

Suzhou in practice: districts, commutes and who can enrol

Most expatriate families live in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), the planned district around Jinji Lake, or in the newer Xiangcheng and Wuzhong areas. Dulwich College Suzhou sits at 360 Gangtian Road in SIP, EtonHouse is on Kefa Road, Nord Anglia is in Xiangcheng, and Canadian International School Kunshan is in Kunshan, a separate city under Suzhou's administration that lies between Suzhou and Shanghai. Your home address often narrows the field before curriculum does, so map the commute first.

Eligibility is the point that surprises families most. Jiangsu's rules for international schools, introduced in 2020, say these schools should enrol mainly the children of foreigners who reside legally in the province and may not enrol the children of Chinese nationals, with provincial approval exceptions for children from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and some returning overseas Chinese and high-level overseas professionals. Dulwich College Suzhou applies this in practice: students must hold a foreign passport, at least one parent must also hold a foreign passport, and both need a valid residence visa. If a parent holds Chinese nationality, ask each school early what they can accept.

Curricula available in Suzhou

  • British (IGCSE and IB Diploma): Dulwich College Suzhou teaches an enhanced British curriculum, with IGCSE in Years 10 and 11 and the IB Diploma in Years 12 and 13.
  • IB continuum: EtonHouse offers the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes, and Canadian International School Kunshan follows the IB from kindergarten, with English as the language of instruction.
  • Cambridge and IB side by side: Nord Anglia School Suzhou Xiangcheng describes an international track offering IGCSE, A Level and the IB Diploma, running next to a Chinese general high school track.

The IBO gives the PYP as ages 3 to 12, the MYP as 11 to 16 and the Diploma as 16 to 19, so an IB school will naturally group children differently from a British one.

The schools worth shortlisting

Dulwich College Suzhou

Opened in 2007, this co-educational day school takes students from age 2 to 18 and describes itself as academically selective. English is the main language, with a dual-language approach in Mandarin and English for ages 2 to 7. Non-native speakers are assessed for English before an admissions decision, and from Year 3 applicants take the Cognitive Abilities Test.

The school reports that its Class of 2025 averaged 36.92 points in the IB Diploma against a global average of 30.58, with a 100 per cent pass rate and 32 per cent of students scoring 40 or more. These are the school's own figures, so ask for the full results table and the cohort size. Families who value a structured British approach and a streamed Mandarin programme tend to fit here.

EtonHouse International School Suzhou

EtonHouse presents itself as an IB continuum school, with its Primary Years Programme accredited in 2008, the Middle Years Programme in 2011 and the Diploma in 2016, according to its description. The early years programme for ages 2 to 5 draws on the Reggio Emilia approach, and the school says it has students from 22 nations with no single nationality above 24 per cent.

It describes itself as inclusive, allowing any student who wishes to take the IB Diploma to do so, which differs from the selective approach elsewhere. The school also introduced a second division in 2021 offering an international curriculum from IPC through IGCSE and A Level at lower fees, so confirm which divisions and year groups are currently open when you enquire.

Nord Anglia School Suzhou, Xiangcheng

This is a twelve-year through school, with primary for ages 6 to 12, middle school for ages 13 to 15 and high school for ages 16 to 18. The high school runs two tracks: an international track with IGCSE, A Level and the IB Diploma, and a Chinese general high school track. Classes are taught by a mix of Chinese and international teachers, with university counsellors for older students.

Fees are not published in the directory and need an enquiry. The dual-track structure is the notable feature: families who want one child to keep a path into Chinese-language study should ask exactly how the two tracks interact, and whether eligibility rules above apply to their situation.

Canadian International School Kunshan

Kunshan lies between Suzhou and Shanghai, which makes this school practical for families who live or work there. It offers the IB from kindergarten through high school with English as the language of instruction, at 555 Chuanshi Road. If parents work in different cities, test the commute before choosing.

What international schooling costs in Suzhou

Suzhou fees are quoted in renminbi, and most schools do not publish full schedules. The directory places Dulwich College Suzhou and EtonHouse in a monthly band of roughly 1,000 to 2,000 US dollars, which works out to roughly RMB 85,000 to 170,000 for a year at current exchange rates, with higher levels at the top of the age range. Treat that as indicative and ask for the current schedule by stage.

  • Application fee: usually charged per child and non-refundable.
  • Capital or debenture contribution: some schools ask for a one-off payment per child, refundable or not depending on the contract.
  • School bus: priced by route and distance.
  • Lunch and uniform: often billed separately from tuition.
  • Exams: IGCSE and IB examination fees are typically added in the final years.

The hard fact to plan around is the legal one: according to the Jiangsu regulations, these schools can enrol only children who fit the permitted categories, and the 1995 national regulations list enrolling Chinese citizens' children as a violation that can lead to a school being ordered to put things right or closed. A fee quote does not guarantee a place if your family's passports do not qualify.

How to choose between them

Start with the exit route. If your child will finish school in a different country, an IB or IGCSE and A Level pathway with international recognition matters more than campus size. If you may move mid-programme, the IB's shared structure eases transfers.

Check the language support. Dulwich College Suzhou assesses English for non-native speakers and offers language support, while its Mandarin programme is streamed by ability. Ask the same of every school, and ask how many hours a week of Mandarin are taught.

Visit with a specific child in mind. Selective schools assess older applicants before offering a place, and Dulwich College Suzhou says it can run assessments remotely for families still abroad. Book the visit and the assessment together to save a trip.
