Zurich offers some of the highest quality international education in Europe β and some of the highest fees. For 2026, expat families relocating to the canton can expect to pay between CHF 25,000 and CHF 45,000 a year per child in tuition, with significant additional costs for transport, lunch, ski trips and external exams. This cost breakdown helps you budget realistically before signing a contract.

What is included in tuition
Most Zurich international schools include classroom materials, in-school assessments, library access and a basic activities programme in the headline tuition figure. What is usually NOT included: the registration fee (CHF 200β500), the application fee (CHF 200β400), the one-off entry fee or capital levy (CHF 4,000β8,000), school lunch (CHF 12β20 per day, CHF 2,500β4,000 a year), bus transport (CHF 4,000β6,500 a year), uniforms where applicable, ski week, residential trips and IB or IGCSE exam fees in the final years (CHF 1,500β3,000).
Hidden costs to plan for
Two costs catch new arrivals off guard: the building fund or capital levy, which is typically a one-off payment at enrolment but can also be charged annually at smaller schools, and the after-school activities (ASA) charge. ASA is sometimes bundled into tuition (ZIS, ICS) and sometimes itemised at CHF 200β800 per term per activity. Add CHF 1,000β2,500 a year for residential trips, music tuition and external sports clubs.
Tax treatment for expat families
Switzerland generally does not allow tax deduction for international school fees on personal income. Some companies relocating senior staff offer a tax-equalised education allowance. Check your assignment letter carefully β schools' published "fee scales" and the after-tax cost to the family can be very different once you account for grossing up.
How to keep costs down
If your priority is keeping fees under CHF 30,000 per year, consider bilingual SIS schools, Obersee, or border options like Schaffhausen. If you have multiple children, ask each shortlisted school for the sibling discount: typical structure is 5 percent for the second child, 10 percent for the third. Some schools offer multi-year prepayment discounts of 1β3 percent. Always ask for a written all-in quote across the next three years before committing β schools have raised fees 2β5 percent annually since 2020.

Frequently asked questions
Are international school fees in Zurich tax deductible?
Generally no. Swiss federal and cantonal income tax does not allow personal deduction of private school fees. Some employers cover education as a relocation benefit, in which case grossed-up tax may apply.
How early do I need to budget the registration fee?
The application fee (CHF 200β400) is paid at submission. The non-refundable registration fee (CHF 4,000β8,000) is due when you accept a place, often 6β12 months before the child starts.
Do international schools in Zurich offer scholarships?
Scholarships are limited and almost always reserved for IB Diploma students with strong academic records. Expect 25β50 percent of tuition; full scholarships are rare in Zurich.
