International school fees in Malaga and along the Costa del Sol range from roughly 6,000 euros a year for early years places to about 20,000 euros for the final two years of A Levels or the IB Diploma at the best known British schools. That is well below London, Geneva or Dubai, but the province has more variation than most, because the market stretches from long established British schools in the city itself to newer American and international campuses towards Marbella and Estepona. This guide explains what schools charge in 2026, what sits outside the headline tuition figure, and how to compare offers sensibly.

Why Malaga has so many international schools

Malaga province has been a destination for British, Scandinavian and German families for half a century, first as retirees and holiday home owners, and increasingly as remote workers and technology employees drawn by Malaga TechPark and the city's growing start up scene. Spain's digital nomad visa, in force since 2023, and the Beckham Law tax regime have accelerated the arrival of working age families, and demand for English medium schooling has followed. The result is a corridor of international schools running from Malaga city west through Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella and Estepona, with the greatest concentration between Marbella and the city.

It enrols a genuinely mixed Spanish and international community, so children pick up Spanish quickly.

Atlas American School of Malaga

The main American curriculum option in the city, offering a US diploma pathway with Spanish integrated across the school. Fees are in the region of 7,000 to 14,000 euros a year. Families moving from the United States or planning US university applications tend to shortlist it first.

Francés Internacional de Málaga

The French system school in the city, with fees broadly between 5,000 and 9,000 euros a year, which makes it the least expensive international option in this list. It suits French speaking families and those attracted by the rigour of the French baccalauréat, and its Spanish provision is strong.

The International School Estepona

A British curriculum school at the western end of the coast, serving families in Estepona, Manilva and Sotogrande. Fees are roughly 8,000 to 16,000 euros. The intake is more international than the city schools and the campus is purpose built, which is reflected in the price.

British International School of Marbella

A British school in the Marbella area with fees of about 9,000 to 17,000 euros a year. Marbella schools generally charge a premium over Malaga city and this one is no exception, but it is well placed for families living between San Pedro and Elviria.

International school fees in Malaga: what else goes on the invoice

Almost every school in the province adds one off and recurring charges beyond tuition. Budget for the following:

• Application fee: 100 to 500 euros, non refundable.
• Enrolment or matriculation fee: 1,000 to 4,000 euros, paid once on joining and generally non refundable.
• Refundable deposit: 1,000 to 3,000 euros at some schools, returned with a term's notice.
• Annual re-enrolment fee: 300 to 800 euros each year at many British schools.
• Books, materials and technology: 400 to 900 euros a year; secondary devices may be an extra one off purchase.
• Uniform: 300 to 600 euros in the first year, including PE kit.
• Lunch: 1,000 to 1,600 euros a year if you take the school canteen.
• Transport: 1,500 to 3,000 euros a year, and the coast's long routes mean many families pay the upper figure.

One point worth knowing about VAT. Unlike the United Kingdom, which began charging 20 percent VAT on private school fees in January 2025, Spain continues to exempt regulated education from VAT under Article 20 of the Spanish VAT law. Tuition invoices from authorised international schools in Malaga therefore carry no IVA, which is one reason a British curriculum education here can cost half of what the same school group charges in England.

Practical advice for families budgeting in Malaga

Decide where you will live before you compare fees. The A-7 motorway is congested at school run times and a school 25 kilometres away can mean 50 minutes each way. Many families choose the school first and then rent within 15 minutes of it; doing it the other way round often forces a compromise.

Ask for the fee schedule in writing for the year of entry. Spanish schools publish fees by course, and increases of 3 to 6 percent a year have been common since 2022. Ask how fees are indexed and whether a multi year guarantee is available for full payment in advance.

Check homologation if you may return to the Spanish system. Spanish nationals and long term residents must have their foreign curriculum studies recognised. Schools handle this routinely, but it can add administrative costs in the final years and it is worth asking how it works before you enrol.
