Educational principles

At The British School of Málaga, we teach the British curriculum alongside Spanish subjects.

The British system helps pupils learn skills, not just facts. It is practical, creative and often uses play.

Children are encouraged to join in, show initiative, build confidence and practise leadership. They also learn key skills like public speaking.

Pupils take charge of their own learning. In the later years of secondary school, they choose the subjects they want to study and the exams they will take.

Information about the educational stages of the The British School of Málaga

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes two year groups: Nursery (age 3) and Reception (age 4). At our school, this stage takes place in a separate building with plenty of outdoor spaces, play areas, and opportunities to explore the environment.

EYFS provides full immersion in school life and, for many children, in the English language. Pupils are supported at all times by a teacher and a learning assistant, as well as additional staff who help during breaks and lunch.

Primary (KS1 and KS2)

Primary education covers Year 1 (age 5) to Year 6 (age 10). This stage lays the foundations of a child's education.

Primary is divided into two key stages:

  1. KS1 (Years 1–2): pupils acquire and consolidate core skills.
  2. KS2 (Years 3–6): pupils gain increasing independence, develop their skills, and take more responsibility for their own learning.

Core subjects, English and Maths, have significant weighting in the timetable. Subjects such as Science, Geography, History and Art are taught through project-based learning. Each class has a dedicated classroom, and subjects are taught by the class teacher.

Secondary (KS3 and KS4)

Secondary education runs from Year 7 (age 11) to Year 11 (age 15) and is split into two stages:

  1. KS3 (Years 7–9)
  2. KS4 (Years 10–11)

Students are expected to develop independence and initiative. Each subject is taught by a specialist teacher, and pupils move to the classroom assigned for each subject according to their timetable.

Sixth Form (KS5 / A-Levels)

The Sixth Form, or KS5, covers Year 12 and Year 13 as a two-year programme. Pupils study for A-Levels, the official UK qualifications required for entry to British universities. A-Levels are also recognised by international universities.

Complementary Spanish Curriculum

At The British School of Málaga, British studies are complemented with Spanish subjects. Pupils study Spanish Language and Literature and Social Sciences alongside the British curriculum. Sixth Form students combine A-Levels with Spanish subjects, giving them direct access to both Spanish public and private universities.
