Founded in 1976, the German International School Abu Dhabi (GISAD) takes children from kindergarten to the German International Abitur under one roof and belongs to the German Schools Abroad network. Its teachers are recruited from Germany and licensed by the German education ministries, and the curriculum follows the Thuringian plans and KMK examination standards. Primary classes are small, with a mixed-age Flex Class for Grades 1 and 2; Grade 5 is an orientation stage, and in Grades 6 to 10 students of different tracks learn together with differentiation. The school awards the Realschulabschluss, the German Language Diploma (DSD) and, since 2018/19, the German International Abitur (DIA), in which geography is taught in English and biology bilingually.

German is the main language of instruction and English is taught from kindergarten and Grade 1, rising to three or four hours a week in secondary; in the DIA up to half of the teaching can be in a foreign language. A second foreign language, French or Spanish, is compulsory from Grade 6, with extra French lessons for newcomers. Arabic is learned by all pupils from Grade 1 and is compulsory for native speakers, and a German as a Foreign Language programme helps non-German speakers join at any stage.

The school runs 11 buses with morning and two afternoon services, lunches are provided by Food Nation, and a medical station, a school shop and a media library with books and audiovisual material in German, English and Arabic are on site.
