Ashgabat International School (AIS), also known as QSI Ashgabat International School, is a private, non-profit, coeducational college-preparatory school in the capital of Turkmenistan. It opened in April 1994 with about 15 elementary pupils, mostly diplomats' children, and was for many years the only international school in the country. Today it belongs to Quality Schools International (QSI) and teaches an American curriculum in English from the three-year-old preschool class to Secondary IV (age 18). The school reports around 340 students from about 22 nationalities, a mix of expatriate and local families, with local enrolment limited by a quota to preserve its international character. Learning follows the QSI mastery model, in which students progress once they demonstrate mastery of each unit, and character education is based on the QSI Success Orientations and the Empower programme. Secondary students can take Advanced Placement courses and the AP Capstone Diploma. AIS holds Middle States Association (MSA) accreditation, is affiliated with the US State Department Office of Overseas Schools and is the only certified SAT and TOEFL iBT test centre in Turkmenistan. Its campus lies in a quiet neighbourhood next to the US Embassy and includes a gym, sports fields and five computer labs.
