The American International School - Riyadh (AIS-R) is an independent, non-profit, co-educational day school in north Riyadh, beside the Al Bustan Village compound and not far from the airport. Founded in 1963, it teaches an American curriculum with an international outlook from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 and has around 1,560 students from more than 65 countries, the largest groups being American, Saudi and Canadian. Learning is built on US standards, including the Common Core for English and mathematics, the Next Generation Science Standards and AERO standards, and in Grades 11 and 12 students can follow the IB Diploma Programme, a mix of IB and US college-preparatory courses, or both; graduates receive a US-style high school diploma. AIS-R is accredited by NEASC and the Council of International Schools, holds CIS Global Citizenship certification, is authorised by the IB and operates under licence from the Saudi Ministry of Education. The purpose-built campus includes gymnasiums, an all-weather track, tennis courts, grass fields, a 700-seat theatre, a learning commons, makerspaces and STEM and robotics labs. A competitive sports programme, Week Without Walls trips abroad, clubs such as Model United Nations and a Parent Teacher Student Organization complete school life. The school has no bus service or uniform, and it does not run a special needs or gifted programme.

AIS-R is organised into three divisions. An Early Years programme serves children in Pre-Kindergarten (age 3 by 1 October) and KG1 in a mixed-age, play-based half-day setting. The Elementary School runs from KG2 to Grade 5, the Middle School covers Grades 6 to 8, and the High School spans Grades 9 to 12, where Grades 11 and 12 follow the IB Diploma Programme or a combination of IB and US college-preparatory courses leading to the AIS-R diploma.

Information about languages of the American International School Riyadh
English is the language of instruction at AIS-R, and students who are still acquiring English receive support from English as an Additional Language teachers, with a separate English Language Learners fee where needed. Arabic is taught from KG2, twice in every five-day cycle in the elementary years, and all Middle School students take Arabic culture and language. French and Spanish can be added from Grade 6, and in the IB Diploma students choose among Arabic B, French B, Spanish B and ab initio courses. An optional after-school Arabic programme (ALPS) is also offered.

AIS-R combines an American programme with the IB Diploma. From KG2 to Grade 10 teaching follows US standards: Common Core literacy and mathematics, Next Generation Science Standards, AERO social studies, national arts and PE standards and ACTFL standards for world languages. In Grades 11 and 12 most students enter the IB Diploma Programme, which includes Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS; courses offered range from Global Politics and Psychology to Theatre, Visual Arts and Environmental Systems and Societies. Students may instead combine IB courses with some 32 non-IB courses, and all graduates earn the AIS-R US high school diploma, which requires at least 25 credits. PSAT and SAT exams are given on campus.

AIS-R runs a competitive athletics programme with tryouts, and teams in swimming, golf, basketball, soccer, track and field, cross country, badminton, volleyball, wrestling and table tennis. The school is a full member of the SAIKAC and GAAC conferences, an associate member of MESAC and plays in the Riyadh leagues RISAC and SSA, with tournaments across the GCC, Europe and Asia. Elementary pupils in Grades 4 and 5 can play soccer, badminton, track and basketball after school. After School Activities cover arts and crafts, music and games, and clubs include Student Council, Model United Nations and TED. Week Without Walls takes secondary students on trips abroad.

AIS-R does not operate school buses, so families organise transport; compound buses and cars enter campus only with an AIS-R ID card. The K-5 and 6-12 dining halls sell hot lunches, and pupils may bring food from home. There is no uniform, only a dress code, although a PE uniform is required from KG2. A student support team of learning support teachers, EAL teachers and counsellors provides targeted help, Individual Learning Plans and social-emotional support, while a college counselling team guides university applications. The school has no programme for significant special needs.

AIS-R occupies a purpose-built campus in north Riyadh connected by an internal gate to the Al Bustan Village compound. The school profile lists elementary, middle and high school classroom buildings, gymnasiums, theatres including a 700-seat performing arts theatre, an all-weather track and field, tennis courts, a learning commons, computer labs and makerspaces, and the school also highlights STEM, robotics and science labs and grass sports fields.
