American School Dhahran (ASD) is a not-for-profit, coeducational day school in Al Khobar, in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, and one of the schools run by the International Schools Group (ISG), a district whose history goes back to 1962. ASD now fills the role once played by the separate Dhahran Elementary Middle School and Dhahran High School, and it enrols children from Kindergarten 1 (age four) through Grade 12 in elementary, middle and high school divisions. Lessons are taught in English on an American standards-based curriculum that puts weight on learner agency, meaning students gradually take charge of their own goals and choices. In the upper grades families can choose between an American college-preparatory track with honours courses, about 20 Advanced Placement courses leading to the AP Capstone Diploma, and the full International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, for which ASD is authorised. The campus, which it shares with British School Dhahran, has separate elementary and secondary libraries, science and design technology labs, art and music areas, a multi-purpose hall, a weight room, a track and football field and swimming pools. Its teams, the Scorpions, take part in ISG jamborees and SAIKAC tournaments. ASD holds Middle States Association accreditation, and the ISG district is a member of the Council of International Schools and of NESA.

School values

ASD shares the ISG mission of inspiring innovation and compassionate action, and describes its community as a family of teachers, students and parents working towards that goal. The district's vision is an education that helps young people excel academically, lead, show kindness and stay intellectually curious. Four core values guide daily life: respect, acceptance, integrity and a sense of responsibility that leads to action. At ASD this translates into an emphasis on learner agency, with students setting their own goals and gaining independence as they move up the school.

My daughter was attending KG2 at this school until recently. I voiced a complaint about some of the content I had found in one of her books and was basically told by the principal that she didn't care due to the upcoming school year and that my daughter was no longer attending. She deemed it to philosophical and refused to say whether the school would remove the book, or if even they thought it was wrong. The content was found within one of the books assigned regarding bravery, but framed within a racial context. It was about segregation in Loui...
