Karachi American School, whose teams compete as the Knights, opened in 1953 to educate the children of American and other foreign residents and has grown into a selective, coeducational, non-profit day school. Teaching is in English and follows a United States college-preparatory model built on AERO standards, running from the K3 year of the Early Learning Center up to Grade 12, where graduation requires twenty-five credits and Advanced Placement courses are widely taken. The site in KDA Scheme No. 1 covers roughly twenty-five acres and holds two libraries, art studios, science and computer laboratories, an auditorium, a gymnasium and fitness centre, a heated twenty-five-metre pool, a running track, grass pitches, and tennis, squash and padel courts. Sixty-two full-time teachers are employed, sixteen of them recruited abroad, and the reported ratio is three pupils to each teacher. The Middle States Association has accredited the school since 1989; it was a founding member of the SAISA sports league. Merit scholarships are offered, and the whole Class of 2025 gained a university place.

Information about languages of the Karachi American School

Lessons at Karachi American School are given in English throughout. A modern language is compulsory in the senior school, where three credits are required, and pupils pick from four levels of French or Spanish or three levels of Urdu, with Advanced Placement papers available in French and Spanish. The same three options are open to Grades 6 to 8. Urdu begins much earlier: it is taught in the Early Learning Center from K4 and right through elementary, following AERO world-language standards, using songs, puppets and games. The middle and high school library also stocks material in French, Korean, Spanish and Urdu.

Karachi American School is not an IB school; its international offer rests on the American Advanced Placement system, which the school calls integral to its curriculum. Places in AP classes depend on teacher recommendation, PSAT results and a minimum B grade in any prerequisite, and anyone taking an AP class must sit the examination, billed separately from tuition. Around twenty AP courses are listed across English, social studies, mathematics, science, modern languages, art and computer science, and an AP International Diploma can be earned through that coursework. Curriculum and standards follow AERO, the American Education Reaches Out framework.
