Educational principles

The European School of Bergen is one of the original European Schools, set up for the families of employees of the European Union institutions; other local and international families may join when places are available. It teaches pupils from 4 to 18 following the European Schools curriculum, which combines approaches to education from across Europe around the eight key competences for lifelong learning and is recognised throughout the European Union as equivalent to national systems, so pupils can transfer in and out at any stage. Studies lead to the European Baccalaureate, a qualification recognised for entry to universities in Europe and beyond. The school places emphasis on the creative arts, with music, art and drama part of daily life, on sport, and on educational technology, including distance-learning lessons with teachers elsewhere in Europe.

Following the European Schools' policy on educational support and inclusive education, ES Bergen offers three levels of help: General, Moderate and Intensive Support. Pupils who need extra help or lack some language skills receive support individually or in small groups, children with a diagnosis from an educational psychologist or other specialist can receive more targeted support, and provision also covers pupils with special educational needs and gifted pupils.
