Educational principles

The European School of Bergen is one of the original European Schools, set up for the families of employees of the European Union institutions; other local and international families may join when places are available. It teaches pupils from 4 to 18 following the European Schools curriculum, which combines approaches to education from across Europe around the eight key competences for lifelong learning and is recognised throughout the European Union as equivalent to national systems, so pupils can transfer in and out at any stage. Studies lead to the European Baccalaureate, a qualification recognised for entry to universities in Europe and beyond. The school places emphasis on the creative arts, with music, art and drama part of daily life, on sport, and on educational technology, including distance-learning lessons with teachers elsewhere in Europe.

The curriculum at the European School of Bergen is delivered in three different languages: English, French and Dutch, and the learning of languages taught by native speakers is at the core of the school's mission. Pupils follow a broad European curriculum in a multilingual environment and take part in initiatives such as the European Day of Languages.
