The American School Foundation of Monterrey (ASFM) is a private, secular, non-profit day school that has offered an American-style, college-preparatory education in northern Mexico since 1928. It began with 57 students brought together by English-speaking families and local companies, became a non-profit foundation in 1944 and, after several moves, settled on a purpose-built 212,000-square-metre campus beside the Huasteca canyon in Santa Catarina, in the Monterrey metropolitan area. The campus opened for older students in 1996 and has housed every grade since 2010. Today ASFM serves more than 2,400 students from Nursery (about age three and a half) to Grade 12, drawn from Mexican families and from around 15 other countries. Teaching follows U.S. standards such as the Common Core, the Next Generation Science Standards and the AERO framework, and most graduates earn both a U.S. high school diploma and the Mexican Bachillerato recognised by the SEP. The high school offers 24 Advanced Placement courses and the AP Capstone diploma, with a student-teacher ratio of about 8 to 1 and dedicated college counselling. ASFM is accredited by NEASC and belongs to ASOMEX, the association of American schools in Mexico.
