The American International School of Monrovia (AISM) is a non-profit, co-educational international day school in Congo Town, Monrovia, located on a gated six-acre campus in a residential area about five miles from the city centre. Its roots go back more than fifty years to ACS, a school founded to serve Monrovia's expatriate community, which closed in 1989 during the civil war. The school reopened as AISM in 2007 with backing from alumni, Liberians and the then US Ambassador, and in October 2025 its stakeholders voted to join Quality Schools International (QSI), the non-profit network that now manages it. English is the language of instruction, and the school welcomes children from the 3-year-old preschool class through Secondary IV (around age 18); classes are organised by age rather than by traditional grade names. Teaching follows the QSI performance-based mastery learning model, in which students progress through clearly defined units once they show mastery at an A or B level. The programme covers English, mathematics, science, cultural studies, art, music, technology, physical education and French, with Intensive English for newcomers and an emphasis on Liberian culture and history. AISM holds Middle States Association (MSA) accreditation valid to 2030 and will be re-accredited within the QSI system. Classes are small and taught by certified educators from North America, Africa and other regions.
