The American School of Kuwait (ASK) is a privately owned, independent, co-educational college preparatory school in Hawalli. It began classes in 1964 as the International School of Kuwait, in a villa in the Dasman area of Sharq, with support from the US Embassy and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Education, and later took its current name. The school moved to Surra in 1969 and to its present Hawalli campus in 1994. Since the 1970s it has been owned by the Abdul Ghafoor family. ASK now enrols more than 2,000 students from over 50 countries, from the early years through Grade 12, and is designed mainly for families who want their children to go on to American higher education. The curriculum is essentially American: the kindergarten follows New York State standards, elementary grades are aligned with Common Core, and the high school offers honors courses and a long list of Advanced Placement courses. English is the language of instruction, while Arabic, French and Spanish are taught as additional languages and Islamic religion is required for Muslim students. The high school has been accredited by the Middle States Association since 1971, and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Education recognises the ASK diploma as equivalent to the national secondary certificate. Testing includes MAP, PSAT, SAT and ACT. Admission is selective, and the school states that it has no English-language or learning support programmes, so applicants must be able to follow the regular curriculum independently.

ASK is organised into early years, elementary, middle and high school. The Child Development Center (Pre-K) and KG1 use play-based programmes aligned with New York State standards, while KG2 and Grades 1-5 follow Common Core-aligned reading, writing, phonics and Everyday Mathematics, with specialist classes in music, art, PE, STEM, science, library, Arabic and religion. The middle school (Grades 6-8) covers core subjects, Arabic or AFL and electives, with accelerated maths and Honors English. The high school (Grades 9-12) offers honors and AP courses and leads to the ASK diploma.

English is the language of instruction at every level. Arabic is compulsory for native Arabic speakers, taught by specialists from the elementary years onward, and non-native speakers take Arabic as a Foreign Language in middle school and in Grade 9. French and Spanish are taught as foreign languages, and both are available at Advanced Placement level (AP French Language and Culture, AP Spanish Language and Culture). Islamic religion classes are required for Muslim students. Because the school has no English support programme, applicants need enough English to follow classes on their own.

ASK follows a US college preparatory model and does not offer the IB. High school students can take honors courses in English 9 and 10, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Chemistry, and a wide range of Advanced Placement courses that end with College Board exams, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics 1, Calculus AB, Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Computer Science A and Principles, English Language and Literature, Environmental Science, Psychology, Economics, Human Geography, US and World History, Comparative Government, Music Theory, Studio Art, French, Spanish, and AP Seminar and Research. Students also sit the PSAT, SAT and ACT, and graduates mainly go on to universities in the United States.

Information about extracurricular activities of the The American School of Kuwait
ASK runs a co-curricular programme for Grades 1 to 12, led by a Director of Athletics and Activities. The school says most sports are offered to both boys and girls from Under 12 to varsity level, and its teams play as the Falcons. Cultural activities include forensics, theatre and jazz band, and students can also join student government, academic games, Model United Nations and the National Honor Society, along with ecology, service and social activities in each division. The Fritz Cameron Leadership Award recognises student leadership in co-curricular life.

Extended hours of Mornings

KG1 and KG2 children can stay for an optional Extended Day Care session after regular hours for an extra fee. All students wear the ASK uniform, with a different colour for each division, sold at the Falcon's Nest uniform shop next to the auditorium. Each division has guidance counselors, and the high school also has academic advisors for underclassmen and seniors plus a Dean of Students for Grades 6-12. New students must open a school health file with the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health before starting. The school states that it does not offer English-language or learning support programmes.
