The American International School of Kuwait (AIS) is a private, co-educational international school in Salmiya, founded in 1991 shortly after the liberation of Kuwait by Dr. Kamil Al Rayes, whose family still forms its governing Board of Owners. It opened with 300 students and 25 teachers and moved from Surra to its current campus in Salmiya Block 11 as it grew. The school now enrols more than 2,000 students from KG1 (age 4) to Grade 12, with over 350 staff; about 60% of students are Kuwaiti, 25% are Arabic speakers from elsewhere in the Middle East and 15% come from Europe, the Americas and Asia. English is the language of instruction. AIS is an IB Continuum school authorised for the Diploma Programme since 2005, the Middle Years Programme since 2006 and the Primary Years Programme since 2007, and it combines the IB framework with US standards such as Common Core and NGSS. Following Kuwaiti Ministry of Education rules, students study Arabic through Grade 9 and Muslim students take Islamic Studies. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association since 1994, most recently in 2022, and belongs to NESA and AAIE. The campus includes a 1,270-seat auditorium, a black box theatre, two gyms, two football fields and two tennis courts. Students compete in the local KASAC league and the regional NESAC conference, which AIS helped found.

AIS is organised into four divisions. Early Childhood covers KG1 and KG2 (entry from age 4) and follows the PYP with an American curriculum base. Elementary School runs from Grade 1 to Grade 4 and completes the PYP with the Exhibition. Middle School covers Grades 5 to 8 within the MYP. High School covers Grades 9 to 12, with the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12. Divisional leaders coordinate across the K-12 continuum to keep expectations consistent.

English is the language of instruction throughout the school, and English language development is guided by the WIDA standards. Arabic is taught as Language and Literature to native speakers, following Kuwaiti Ministry of Education requirements, and as Arabic as a Foreign Language to non-native speakers; all students study Arabic through Grade 9. French is offered as an additional language, with foreign language courses aligned to ACTFL guidelines, and both Arabic and French continue into the IB Diploma. Muslim students take Islamic Studies under the Ministry curriculum.

AIS is one of a relatively small number of schools worldwide offering the full IB continuum. The Primary Years Programme runs from kindergarten through elementary school and ends with the PYP Exhibition, a research project linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Middle Years Programme starts in Grade 5 and includes language and literature, mathematics, sciences, individuals and societies, Arabic, Islamic studies, physical and health education, design and the arts, with culminating MYP projects. In Grades 11-12 students follow the IB Diploma Programme, with the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Across all grades, the curriculum is aligned with US standards: Common Core for English and maths, NGSS for science and the C3 framework for social studies.

AIS is a founding member of NESAC (Near East Sports and Activities Conference) and competes locally in the Kuwait American Schools Activities Conference (KASAC), with high school teams travelling to events in places such as Dubai and Qatar. Teams in swimming, volleyball, football, basketball, track and field and badminton compete in Under 12, Under 14, Junior Varsity and Varsity categories. Sports clubs begin in KG1 and competitive teams start in middle school. Activity teams include Debate and Forensics, Band and Choir, Academic Games and a Model United Nations team. Students can also join the Student Leadership Council, the National Honor Society and after-school or lunchtime clubs.

AIS runs a school bus service with full-year and one-semester routes priced by distance. The campus has a canteen, a medical clinic and security staff, and the school describes itself as allergy aware. All students follow a uniform policy; items can be bought at the school uniform store or from outside suppliers that meet the requirements. High school students receive university planning, academic advising and emotional support from the counseling team. Students use ManageBac, Office 365 and Kognity for coursework. AIS occupies a campus of three to four acres in Salmiya, Block 11. The Dr. Kamil AlRayes Auditorium seats 1,270 and is complemented by a black box theatre and a performing arts studio. Sports facilities include two gymnasiums, an aerobics room, a weight room, two outdoor football fields and two tennis courts. Academic spaces include science labs, computer labs, a 'Genius Bar', a learning commons, music rooms and art rooms, and there are separate libraries for the lower and upper divisions. Younger children have a dedicated kindergarten play area. A canteen, a medical clinic and campus security complete the facilities.
