The American School in Japan (ASIJ) is a non-profit, independent, co-educational day school in Tokyo that has been teaching international families since 1902, one of the oldest international schools in the world. It serves students of all nationalities, including families posted to Japan for a few years and those settled in Tokyo, with a student body drawn from 59 countries. ASIJ runs two campuses: the Early Learning Center in Roppongi for nursery (from age 3), pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, and a 5.8-hectare K-12 campus in Chofu, next to Nogawa Park, described by the school as the largest and most complete international school facility in Japan. The programme follows the American model of education and leads to an American high school diploma, with a wide range of Advanced Placement courses including the AP Capstone Diploma, concurrent university enrolment through Syracuse University Project Advance and online courses via Global Online Academy. ASIJ is accredited by WASC and is a member of NAIS. Japanese culture is woven into learning through the Japan Center and its tatami room, and more than 170 co-curricular activities are available school-wide, with high school teams in 15 sports competing in the Kanto Plain League. English is the medium of instruction and of all school communication.

ASIJ has four divisions. The Early Learning Center in Roppongi covers Nursery (children must be 3 by 1 September), Pre-K and Kindergarten; Kindergarten is also offered on the Chofu campus. The Elementary School runs from Kindergarten to Grade 5, the Middle School covers Grades 6-8, and the High School covers Grades 9-12 and leads to the ASIJ diploma with AP courses.

English is the language of instruction and of all communication, and at least one parent must be fluent in English. Students need a high level of English to succeed, but a language support programme helps multilingual learners in Grades 1-8. As a school rooted in Japan, ASIJ includes Japanese language and cultural studies, supported by a Japan Center that runs cultural activities such as tea ceremony and partnerships with local institutions, and middle school students can take foreign language electives. The summer programme also offers Japanese classes for heritage speakers.

ASIJ offers more than 170 co-curriculars. High school teams compete in 15 sports in the Kanto Plain League and other tournaments, the middle school offers 20 sports, and elementary pupils can try swimming, basketball, soccer and tennis; Shotokan karate and kendo run across the Chofu divisions, and the ELC offers karate and gymnastics. The arts include annual musicals in every division, plays, jazz ensembles, band, choir and orchestra (with Kanto Plain honour groups), ballet, hip hop and Japanese dance, film-making and ASIJ TV. Robotics teams, debate and speech, Model UN, Amnesty International and around 25 service projects add further options.

ASIJ runs an extensive bus service with 33 buses and around 170 bus monitors trained in first aid; riders tap in and out so parents can follow them on an app. The Chofu cafeteria and kiosk offer hot meals with a vegetarian option and a salad bar, and the ELC has an optional lunch delivery. A K-12 learning support programme serves students with mild learning needs, and counsellors provide personal, academic and college guidance. Students in Grades 4-5 need an iPad and Grades 6-12 a MacBook. ASIJ does not offer scholarships to new applicants.

The 14-acre Chofu campus includes two year-round artificial-turf fields, three gyms, a 25 m indoor pool, six rooftop tennis courts, a covered basketball court, a fitness centre, a wrestling and gymnastics room and a dance studio. For the arts there is a 570-seat theatre with fly-loft and orchestra pit, a black box theatre, a multi-purpose room, band, choir and practice rooms, art rooms with kilns, a video studio and the Creative Arts Design Center with design-tech and robotics labs. Four divisional libraries, science labs, a maker space, a Japan Center with a tatami room, a garden and playgrounds complete the campus; the Roppongi ELC has its own music room, library and playground.
