Kodaikanal International School, widely called KIS, is a Christian, coeducational boarding school in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, roughly 2,200 metres up. Margaret Eddy opened it in 1901 as Highclerc School for the children of American missionaries working in the south of the country, and it later became the earliest school in India to adopt the International Baccalaureate, taking on the Diploma in 1976. Today the whole IB continuum is taught: PYP from Pre-KG to Grade 5, MYP across Grades 6 to 10, and the Diploma or Career-related Programme in the final two years, with an American-accredited high school diploma that also admits leavers directly to Indian universities. Operations are spread across seven sites in the town: Highclerc holds the high school, Ganga the elementary and middle years, and sixteen residences on four campuses take 25 to 35 boarders each under live-in residential parents. Pupils come from eighteen or more nationalities and twenty-four Indian states. Music, drama and a long-established hiking and camping programme at the school's own 135-acre Poondi site are its signature strengths. Accreditation is held with the Middle States Association, the IB and CIS.

KIS follows the full IB continuum. The Primary Years Programme runs from Pre-KG to Grade 5 at the Ganga campus, although the school currently admits outside applicants from Grade 5, when residential life begins, and keeps Pre-KG to Grade 4 for staff children. The Middle Years Programme covers Grades 6 to 10, with middle school at Ganga and high school from Grade 9 at Highclerc. In Grades 11 and 12 students take the IB Diploma or the IB Career-related Programme, and the school is also a test centre for AP, SAT and ACT exams.

English is the main medium of teaching, and a dedicated ESL department works with pupils in Grades 3 to 10 who arrived having studied in another tongue, moving them through Intensive English classes until they can join mainstream Language Arts by Grade 11. Beyond that, the Second Language department staffs teachers of Hindi, Spanish, Korean, French, German and Tamil. At Diploma level, Korean can be taken as a first language alongside English, while Hindi, Spanish, German, Korean and French are available as acquisition subjects, some from scratch as ab initio courses.

KIS runs the complete International Baccalaureate continuum, and it holds a place in the programme's history: it was the earliest Indian school and the third in Asia to adopt the IB Diploma, doing so in 1976 when only a handful of schools worldwide offered it. The Primary Years Programme covers the youngest classes, the Middle Years Programme spans Grades 6 to 10 with a Personal Project in Grade 10, and Grades 11 and 12 lead to either the Diploma or the Career-related Programme, with six subject groups, Theory of Knowledge, the extended essay and CAS. An IB World Religions course is also taught. The campus is an authorised test centre for Advanced Placement examinations and for the SAT, ACT and IELTS.

Outside class, sport, the arts and the outdoors fill the week. Students play football, basketball, badminton, tennis, cricket and more, and the three school houses compete each year at Field Day. The music department offers lessons in voice, piano, strings, guitar, wind and percussion, plus Hindustani and Carnatic traditions, with orchestra and ensembles performing almost weekly. Drama and visual arts are signature programmes. Hiking and camping are compulsory, with class camps at Poondi and the Tahr Pin hiking awards, and clubs include robotics, Model United Nations, creative writing, the National Honor Society and singing. Weekend events are organised by the Activities Department.

KIS is primarily residential, with 16 houses led by live-in residential parents. Two dining halls and a snack bar serve varied vegetarian, non-vegetarian and vegan menus, with special meals on medical advice. The 24-bed dispensary has a full-time doctor and registered nurses around the clock. A Learning Resources team supports students with mild to moderate difficulties such as dyslexia, ADHD or Asperger syndrome, and an ESL department helps non-native speakers. Counsellors run the BUILD college programme, and need-based financial aid of up to 95 percent of the fee is available from Grade 5.

Highclerc houses the high school and Ganga the elementary and middle school, and between them the school has 73 classrooms, three libraries, two media centres, five computer labs, six science laboratories and a recreation room. Music is well resourced, with more than 50 practice rooms, over 50 pianos and rehearsal studios Sports facilities include two covered courts, an Olympic-standard badminton court, three playing fields, three tennis courts, squash and racquetball courts, playgrounds and the Loch End Fitness Center. The 135-acre Poondi campsite adds a lake, a rope course, a zip line and a climbing wall.
