Kodaikanal International School, widely called KIS, is a Christian, coeducational boarding school in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, roughly 2,200 metres up. Margaret Eddy opened it in 1901 as Highclerc School for the children of American missionaries working in the south of the country, and it later became the earliest school in India to adopt the International Baccalaureate, taking on the Diploma in 1976. Today the whole IB continuum is taught: PYP from Pre-KG to Grade 5, MYP across Grades 6 to 10, and the Diploma or Career-related Programme in the final two years, with an American-accredited high school diploma that also admits leavers directly to Indian universities. Operations are spread across seven sites in the town: Highclerc holds the high school, Ganga the elementary and middle years, and sixteen residences on four campuses take 25 to 35 boarders each under live-in residential parents. Pupils come from eighteen or more nationalities and twenty-four Indian states. Music, drama and a long-established hiking and camping programme at the school's own 135-acre Poondi site are its signature strengths. Accreditation is held with the Middle States Association, the IB and CIS.

English is the main medium of teaching, and a dedicated ESL department works with pupils in Grades 3 to 10 who arrived having studied in another tongue, moving them through Intensive English classes until they can join mainstream Language Arts by Grade 11. Beyond that, the Second Language department staffs teachers of Hindi, Spanish, Korean, French, German and Tamil. At Diploma level, Korean can be taken as a first language alongside English, while Hindi, Spanish, German, Korean and French are available as acquisition subjects, some from scratch as ab initio courses.

KIS runs the complete International Baccalaureate continuum, and it holds a place in the programme's history: it was the earliest Indian school and the third in Asia to adopt the IB Diploma, doing so in 1976 when only a handful of schools worldwide offered it. The Primary Years Programme covers the youngest classes, the Middle Years Programme spans Grades 6 to 10 with a Personal Project in Grade 10, and Grades 11 and 12 lead to either the Diploma or the Career-related Programme, with six subject groups, Theory of Knowledge, the extended essay and CAS. An IB World Religions course is also taught. The campus is an authorised test centre for Advanced Placement examinations and for the SAT, ACT and IELTS.
