Bombay International School, known as BIS, is a co-educational day school in South Mumbai that opened in June 1962 with 90 children in six rooms and a terrace. It was founded by a large group of Indian and expatriate parents who wanted a liberal, secular alternative for their children, and it is still run as a parent co-operative whose members sit on the Board of Governors and on committees for areas such as transport, sport, safety and the kitchen. The school describes itself as the small school with a big heart and keeps classes deliberately small; its most recent IB Diploma profile reports around 580 students from the early years to Grade 12. Teaching follows the IB Primary Years Programme up to Grade 5, Cambridge IGCSE in Grades 9 and 10 and the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12. BIS operates on two campuses: the Gilbert Building at Babulnath, which houses the pre-primary classes, the middle and senior school and the Diploma years, and the Bai Bangalee School campus at Marine Lines for the primary grades. Model United Nations is compulsory from Grade 8, and students compete in city and national tournaments in several sports.

School values

BIS was set up to offer a liberal and secular education, and its founding vision still shapes the school: small classes, imaginative teaching of a high standard, teachers who love knowledge and parents who work alongside them. It aims to educate all children without distinction, to build character, to awaken curiosity about the natural world and to develop independent, liberal and creative thinkers. Core values include small, nurturing classes, open dialogue and parents as active partners in their children's education.
