Founded in 2004, the International School of Lyon (ISL) is a not-for-profit association and the only school in Lyon to teach a complete curriculum in English. Its campus is in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, on the south-western edge of Lyon, and welcomes around 300 students aged 3 to 18 from more than 45 nationalities. ISL is authorised by the International Baccalaureate for the Primary Years Programme and the Diploma Programme, is a registered Cambridge school and is regularly inspected by the French Ministry of Education.

Information about the educational stages of the International School of Lyon

Kindergarten includes Transition Kindergarten for children turning three, Pre-Kindergarten, Junior and Senior Kindergarten, and follows the IB Primary Years Programme in a bilingual setting. Primary School (Grades 1 to 5) continues the PYP and ends with the PYP Exhibition. After Middle School, Grades 9 and 10 prepare for Cambridge IGCSE examinations and Grades 11 and 12 follow the IB Diploma Programme.

English is the language of instruction, and students who are beginners in English can receive ESOL support. French is compulsory for every student, from ten periods a week in Kindergarten, where children learn in a 25% French immersion setting, to five periods in Grades 1 to 10; it is taught at native (Language A), intermediate (Language B) and beginner (Ab Initio) levels. A Home Language Coordinator promotes students' mother tongues, and IB students can take their home language as a self-taught Language A.

Information about extracurricular activities of the International School of Lyon

ISL's free Enrichment Programme runs at lunchtime and after school for Grades 1 to 12. Clubs vary from year to year and have included football, basketball, multisports, coding and STEM, choir and music, crafts, chess and other strategy games, robotics and debate, including Model United Nations; the school co-organises the ILYMUN conference with around 500 participants. Individual instrument and voice lessons are available at extra cost.

After-school childcare is available at extra cost until 6 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and until 5 pm on Fridays. Students bring a packed lunch or, from Grade 5, buy fresh meals from a smart vending fridge. There is no school bus, but the no. 8 bus links the school with Perrache station. Primary classes go on an annual three-day residential trip, and an active Parent-Teacher Association supports school life.

ISL occupies a purpose-built building on protected woodland, where classrooms are arranged in groups on split levels around an open central atrium. Kindergarten, primary and secondary have their own areas but share the library and the rooms for art, design, music and ICT, and there is a gym for primary PE and enrichment activities. Outdoors are a playground, an artificial-turf multi-sport field, a small amphitheatre and lawns, and some sports and swimming take place in nearby municipal facilities.
