Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa is a co-educational day and boarding school on a hillside at Waterford Park, on the edge of Mbabane, the capital of Eswatini. It opened in 1963 as a deliberately multiracial school founded in opposition to apartheid in neighbouring South Africa, and over the decades it educated the children of several leading figures of the liberation struggle in the region, and it is now part of the United World Colleges movement. Today it has more than 600 students from over 60 nationalities, taught by staff from about 15 countries, and roughly 400 of them board on campus. The school covers the five secondary years, Form 1 to Form 5, followed by the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma. The lower forms follow the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum, Forms 4 and 5 take Cambridge IGCSE examinations, and the final two years are devoted to the IB Diploma. Students join Form 1 from about age 11, and IB students may enter through UWC National Committees or apply directly if they live in Africa. Weekly community service runs through every year group, and a scholarship programme supports talented African students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
