Britannica International School, Shanghai is a British-owned and British-managed international school delivering the English National Curriculum to students aged 18 months to 18 years, from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to IGCSE and A Level. The school follows the English National Curriculum from the Early Years through to Sixth Form. The Early Years (International Kindergarten) delivers the British Early Years Foundation Stage programme for children aged 18 months to 5 years across seven areas of learning, with specialist teaching beginning in Reception. Primary covers Key Stage 1 (ages five to seven) and Key Stage 2, where modern foreign languages, drama and internationalism are introduced. Secondary covers Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 13) and Key Stage 4 (ages 14 to 16), the latter leading to external IGCSE examinations, after which students enter the Sixth Form to complete AS and A2 level qualifications. Extra support is given throughout to students with English as an additional language.

English is the principal language of the school and the language of instruction, supported by a comprehensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme delivered by specialist teachers, with students placed in ability groups for English lessons in the Secondary years. Mandarin is a mandatory subject from Early Years up to Key Stage 3, with daily lessons, and is also offered as an option at IGCSE and A Level, with four lessons per week on examination courses. In addition, an extensive World Languages Programme offers native language lessons throughout the school in Mandarin, Korean, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Hebrew, all delivered by specialist native-speaking teachers. Native speakers of these languages, and of Portuguese, are supported from Reception onwards through specialist classroom instruction and after-school extension lessons. The school holds the Bell Foundation ALFRI accreditation for EAL.

Menus change weekly and combine Western and Asian dishes, including chicken, beef, lamb, duck, fish, tuna, pizza, pasta, noodles, soup, rice, potatoes and vegetarian options, with fresh salad and fruit served with every meal and juices and water available every day. Early Years students have separate dining areas, with crockery and utensils appropriate to their age and stage of development.
