Westwood International School (WIS) is an independent, not-for-profit, co-educational day school on the southern side of Gaborone, Botswana. Founded in May 1988, it is governed by a School Council made up of founding members, parent representatives and a representative of the United States embassy, and all revenue is reinvested in the school. Around 550 students from some 39 countries attend, taught by local and international staff. WIS describes itself as the only International Baccalaureate continuum school in Botswana, offering the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme for students aged about 5 to 18, from Reception to Year 13. The school follows a January to December academic year. It is authorised by the IB and accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), and it is also a member of the Association of International Schools in Africa and the Independent Schools Association of Botswana. It is the only US Department of State-assisted school in the country. Sustainability is a defining feature: the 3.4-hectare campus runs on solar power, uses water from its own borehole, recycles and composts its waste, and in 2023 became the first school in Botswana to receive the Eco-Schools Green Flag.
