IKNS is a non-profit, self-supporting private school in the Isa Town educational area, about twelve kilometres from Manama, that first took pupils in September 1983 after a group of Bahraini parents set up a society to found it. It is mixed and bilingual throughout, running from KG1 to Grade 12 across three separately led divisions, and reports roughly 1,900 pupils, the great majority of them Bahraini. Instruction switches medium as pupils move up: the integrated unit of inquiry is taught in Arabic in the youngest classes and in English from Grade 3, with the other tongue carried as a subject, and Bahrain's national syllabuses in Arabic, Islamic studies and social studies run alongside. Senior pupils choose in Grade 11 between the IB Diploma, which the school has offered since 1990, and an American diploma track. The site of more than 62,000 square metres is split into a kindergarten and elementary campus and a middle and secondary campus, with an indoor sports complex holding a five-lane pool, courts and a fitness hall, two media centres, computer and science laboratories, art and pottery spaces, music, drama and dance halls and a 300-seat auditorium.

Information about languages of the Ibn Khuldoon National School

The school is bilingual in Arabic and English at every level, and the two are not treated as first and foreign language but swapped as the medium of teaching. From KG1 to Grade 2 the integrated unit of inquiry, which carries science, social studies, mathematics and Arabic, is delivered in Arabic by homeroom specialists while English is a taught subject with native-speaking staff; from Grade 3 to Grade 5 that arrangement reverses. In the Middle Years Programme the requirement to study two languages is met with English and Arabic, and Diploma candidates who take two courses from the studies-in-language-and-literature group can earn the bilingual diploma. Faculty are drawn about equally from Bahrain, other Arab countries and English-speaking countries.
