Choosing an International School in Dubai: 2026 Family Guide

Dubai has more international schools per capita than any other major city in the world: more than 220 active campuses serve a child population that is around 80 per cent expat. The breadth is exhilarating but it makes the choice harder. KHDA inspections, a flood of new school openings every year and rapidly evolving fee structures mean a school that was the obvious answer three years ago may not be the right answer for 2026. This guide walks expat families through how to choose an international school in Dubai with confidence.

Available curricula in Dubai

Dubai offers more curricula than any other Gulf city. The most common are the British curriculum (FS1 to A Level), the International Baccalaureate (PYP, MYP and DP), the American curriculum with Advanced Placement, the Indian curriculum (CBSE and ICSE) and the French national programme. There are also French-Lebanese, German, Japanese, Filipino, Pakistani and Russian schools serving specific national communities, plus a growing cluster of bilingual Arabic-English schools.

Roughly 60 per cent of Dubai's international schools follow the British curriculum, around 15 per cent the American curriculum and around 10 per cent are full IB schools. The remainder split across other national systems. For families who plan to move on within a few years, the British and IB pathways are the most portable internationally.

International school fees in Dubai (2026)

Realistic 2026 ranges per academic year are:

FS1-FS2 (ages 3-5): around AED 25,000 to AED 60,000. Primary (Years 1-6): around AED 40,000 to AED 90,000. Secondary (Years 7-11): around AED 55,000 to AED 110,000. Sixth form / IB Diploma (Years 12-13): around AED 65,000 to AED 120,000. KHDA caps annual fee increases based on each school's most recent inspection rating, so check what was approved for the 2025-26 cycle on the KHDA website.

Add a registration fee of AED 500-1,000, a re-enrolment fee of AED 1,000-3,000, optional bus fees of AED 6,000-10,000 per year and uniform of AED 1,500-3,000. Most schools also charge a refundable deposit of 5-10 per cent of annual tuition.

Practical tips for choosing a school in Dubai

Read the latest KHDA inspection report. Every Dubai school is inspected against the same framework and rated Weak, Acceptable, Good, Very Good or Outstanding. Reports are public and detailed; they tell you a lot more than any glossy school brochure.

Match school location to home location. Dubai traffic is heavy at school start and end times, especially on Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. A school 20 minutes away in the middle of the day can become a 50-minute commute at 7:30 am.

Apply early for popular year groups. FS1, Year 1 and Year 7 fill up first. For September 2026 entry at the most popular schools, you should already be on waiting lists. Mid-year arrivals are usually possible in less in-demand year groups; ask the admissions team about flex offers and conditional acceptance.
