What are the best international schools in Belgrade? The leading options are the International School of Belgrade (IB, 500 students, 2026-27 tuition 10,580 to 28,945 US dollars), British International School Belgrade (Cambridge to A Level), Chartwell (Cambridge, ages 2 to 18) and Brook Hill International School (Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level, year-round admissions).

If you are comparing the best international schools in Belgrade, the choice is more varied than it first appears: one long-established school with American roots and the IB, several Cambridge-based schools in the British tradition, and a handful of specialist early years options.
This guide compares the four main options using their own published information, so you can see how the fees, accreditations and admissions rules differ. It does not name a single winner, because the right fit depends on your child's age, your likely length of stay and the university route you want to keep open.
Belgrade in practice: currency and where to live
Serbia is outside the euro area and its currency is the dinar, which the National Bank of Serbia issues and manages. That matters for school fees because the schools price in different currencies: the International School of Belgrade quotes tuition in US dollars and its capital fee in euros, so a family paid in dinars carries an exchange-rate risk on both. Always ask which currency your invoice will use and when the rate is fixed.
Belgrade is a large city divided by the Sava and Danube rivers, and the schools sit in different residential areas. Chartwell, for example, describes park-like gardens in a quiet residential area, so check how you would get there. Ask each school which areas its transport covers; the International School of Belgrade says its transport is optional and generally available in the areas around the school.
Curricula available in Belgrade
- IB: the International School of Belgrade is accredited by the IB, NEASC and the Serbian Ministry of Education, and says its IB programme authorisations date from 2010.
- Cambridge: Brook Hill and Chartwell follow Cambridge International pathways, with Brook Hill teaching Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level from Kindergarten through Upper Secondary.
- British with an American option: British International School Belgrade follows the British system, with Cambridge Checkpoint tests in Years 6 and 9, IGCSE in Year 11, AS and A Level in Years 12 and 13, and an American high school diploma programme through the University of Nebraska for students who do not follow the Cambridge route.
The IBO gives the PYP as ages 3 to 12, the MYP as 11 to 16 and the Diploma as 16 to 19.
The schools worth shortlisting
International School of Belgrade
ISB was founded in 1948 by Lady Peake, wife of the British Ambassador, and describes itself as the school that was first accredited by NEASC as an international school, in 1981. Its website shows about 500 students from 47 nationalities, an average class size of 15 and an age range of 3 to 18. The most recent joint IB and NEASC accreditation process concluded in 2022.
ISB publishes its fees openly and offers a scholarship page, an age placement guide and an EAL programme. It suits families who want the IB through to the Diploma and an established community, and who can absorb the higher price and the dollar pricing.
British International School Belgrade
This school follows the British system throughout, with Cambridge checkpoints and IGCSE leading to AS and A Level. Students who do not follow the Cambridge route in the final two years can take an American high school diploma through the University of Nebraska, and the school operates the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. That choice of endings suits families who may move to the United States as well as the United Kingdom.
Fees are available on request, so ask for the schedule by year group and what is included.
Chartwell International School
Chartwell describes more than 20 years of operation and education from age 2 to 18 across seven premises with park-like gardens and sports fields. It follows the Cambridge International Education programme, based on the British National Curriculum, and says it is accredited by Cambridge and registered with the Serbian Ministry of Education, with more than 40 nationalities among its pupils.
The multi-premises layout means different age groups may be in different buildings, so ask which address your child would attend and whether siblings share a site.
Brook Hill International School
Brook Hill is accredited by Cambridge International Education and by the Serbian Ministry of Education, according to its website. From Kindergarten through Upper Secondary students follow Cambridge, including IGCSE, AS and A Level. Admissions run year-round across all ages: families usually provide a birth certificate, recent school reports and passports for the child and parents, and a short English assessment may be used for placement. Trial days let children spend time in class before enrolling.
The school emphasises personalised mentorship and supports both native and non-native English speakers, which makes it a candidate for families arriving mid-year or with a child still learning English.
What international schooling costs in Belgrade
The International School of Belgrade publishes 2026-27 tuition in US dollars: 10,580 for Pre-Kindergarten, 24,225 for Kindergarten to Grade 5, 26,095 for Grades 6 to 8 and 28,945 for Grades 9 to 12. New students also pay a capital fee of 3,000 euros, while returning students pay 1,500 euros, with a 50 per cent loyalty discount for self-paying families enrolled continuously for more than five years.
- Application fee: 500 US dollars at ISB, one-time and non-refundable.
- Registration fee: 1,000 US dollars for new ISB students.
- EAL fee: a one-time 1,500 US dollar charge when a new student enters ISB's EAL programme.
- Payment plan: a 400 US dollar non-refundable fee for individual payers at ISB, subject to the director's approval.
- Transport: optional at ISB, priced separately.
For a new Grade 3 student, that adds up to roughly 29,000 US dollars in the first year before transport, once you include tuition, the capital fee, application and registration. We could not find comparable published schedules for the Cambridge schools, so request them directly and compare on a like-for-like basis.
The hard fact to plan around is the currency mix: ISB's tuition is in dollars and its capital fee in euros, while Serbia's own currency is the dinar.
Practical advice
Ask about the capital fee. It is the most easily missed item and at ISB it is double for new students. Ask whether other schools charge a development or capital contribution.
Compare accreditation, not slogans. Check what each school is authorised for: the IBO lists authorised programmes, Cambridge lists approved centres, and the Serbian Ministry registers schools.
Visit with questions about language. If your child is learning English, ask how many hours of EAL support are included and whether it costs extra. At ISB it is a one-off 1,500 dollar fee for new entrants.
