International School Fees in Kuala Lumpur: 2026 Cost Guide

Kuala Lumpur has one of the widest spreads of international school prices in Asia. A family can pay around RM 2,300 a month for a British-curriculum Year 1 place in one part of the city, or more than RM 10,000 a month for the final years of an IB or American-style school a few kilometres away. Understanding international school fees in Kuala Lumpur means looking past the headline tuition to the joining fees, deposits and, since July 2025, the service tax that now applies to the most expensive schools.

This guide uses the schools' own 2026-27 fee schedules (and one 2027 calendar-year schedule) to show what families actually pay, stage by stage, and where the less obvious costs hide. All figures are in Malaysian ringgit; at Bank Negara Malaysia's rate of RM 4.08 to the US dollar in mid October 2026, RM 100,000 is roughly USD 24,500.

Where KL's international schools are, and why it affects cost

Most expatriate families settle in a handful of areas: Mont Kiara and Desa ParkCity in the north-west, Bangsar and Damansara Heights closer to the centre, Ampang to the east, and Petaling Jaya and Bandar Utama just across the city boundary in Selangor. Schools follow the same pattern. The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) is in Ampang Hilir, Mont'Kiara International School sits in the heart of Mont Kiara, and The British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL) is in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya.

Traffic is the hidden cost. Alice Smith School, for instance, splits its primary campus on Jalan Bellamy near the city centre from its secondary campus at Seri Kembangan, about 20 minutes apart according to the school, so a family with children in both sections needs a plan. A school bus, a driver or a rental near the campus all have a price, and it is often worth paying a little more in rent to cut a long daily drive.

Curricula and how they shape fees

English National Curriculum: the largest group, from Early Years to IGCSE and A levels, at schools such as Alice Smith, BSKL and Taylor's International School.
International Baccalaureate: Mont'Kiara International School says it has been an IB World School since 2000, with the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes.
American-style curriculum: ISKL offers the IB Diploma and Advanced Placement courses; M'KIS describes itself as an IB World School with an American curriculum.
Other national systems: KL also has French, German, Australian and Indian-curriculum schools, generally priced below the top British and American schools.

Five KL schools and what they charge

Alice Smith School

Alice Smith teaches the British curriculum to 3 to 18 year olds on its two campuses and says it has students from 53 nationalities. Its 2026-27 fees run from RM 53,730 a year for normal-day pre-school to RM 89,070 in Years 1 and 2, RM 97,410 in Years 3 to 6, RM 112,950 in Years 7 to 9 and RM 122,370 from Year 10 to Year 13, before 6% SST. New families pay a RM 1,500 application fee, a non-refundable RM 20,000 enrolment fee and a refundable parent deposit of RM 15,000 (pre-school and Reception) or RM 24,000 (Year 1 upwards). Secondary students on the modern languages (MLL) programme pay an extra RM 4,500 a term.

Tip: the school gives a 3% discount for paying the full year upfront and adds a 3% surcharge for monthly instalments, a six-point swing worth more than RM 7,000 a year in secondary.

The British International School of Kuala Lumpur

BSKL, part of the Nord Anglia group, teaches the English National Curriculum through IGCSE and A levels for ages 2 to 18 in Bandar Utama. Its 2026-27 annual fees, all subject to 6% SST, start at RM 58,935 for Pre-nursery and Nursery and climb through RM 94,300 for Years 2 to 6 and RM 106,790 for Years 7 to 9 to RM 127,605 in Sixth Form. The enrolment fee of RM 18,000 is charged once per family, not per child, which makes a real difference for families with two or three children.

Tip: BSKL also collects an Early Notice Payback of RM 10,000 per child, refunded if you give three months' written notice and settle all fees. Diarise that notice period the day you sign.

The International School of Kuala Lumpur

ISKL is a not-for-profit school from Early Years to Grade 12, accredited by WASC and CIS, offering the IB Diploma and AP courses. For 2026-27 it lists annual tuition from RM 70,200 in Prep Reception to RM 115,600 for Prep Senior to Grade 5, RM 130,600 for Grades 6 to 8 and RM 143,400 for Grades 9 to 12, with a RM 1,800 application fee. From Prep Senior, new students also pay a one-off registration fee of RM 59,000, which the school says funds facilities and technology. The school states that 6% SST applies, without saying whether the listed figures include it.

Tip: the RM 59,000 registration fee also falls due when a Prep Junior child moves up to Prep Senior, so families starting in the early years should budget for it later.

Mont'Kiara International School

M'KIS bills by semester. Its 2026-27 schedule shows RM 18,260 a semester for Pre-K3 and RM 21,680 for Pre-K4, both without SST, then RM 53,102 for Grades 1 to 5 and RM 65,270 for High School, each plus 6% SST, so roughly RM 106,000 to RM 131,000 a year before tax. The one-off admission fee for Grades 1 to 12 is RM 28,000 for the first child, falling for siblings, and it is waived for students transferring from other accredited international schools in Malaysia.

Tip: if your child already attends an accredited international school elsewhere in Malaysia, ask M'KIS for the transfer waiver in writing before you pay.

Taylor's International School Kuala Lumpur

Taylor's runs a British-curriculum school in Taman Maluri and a second campus in Puchong, on a January to December year. Its 2027 schedule lists tuition, excluding SST, from RM 19,830 a year for Nursery and Reception to RM 42,630 in Year 6 and RM 57,240 for Years 10 and 11. Joining costs are a RM 1,000 application fee, a registration fee of RM 5,000 (Early Years) or RM 6,000 (Primary and Secondary), and a refundable deposit of RM 3,500 in Early Years or one term's tuition in Primary and Secondary.

Tip: the school adds 10% to tuition for English as an Additional Language support from January 2026, or 20% for its EEP programme, so a child who needs English support could push the bill above the RM 60,000 tax threshold in the upper years.

Fees by stage and the extras to budget for

Across these five schools, published annual tuition for 2026-27 falls roughly into these bands:

Early Years (ages 2 to 4): about RM 20,000 at Taylor's to RM 70,000 at the premium schools.
Primary: about RM 27,000 to RM 116,000.
Secondary and pre-university: about RM 49,000 to RM 143,000 (roughly USD 12,000 to USD 35,000).

The hard fact every budget now needs: according to the Royal Malaysian Customs MySST guidance, education services became taxable at 6% on 1 July 2025 for private educational institutions, including international and expatriate schools, that charge fees exceeding RM 60,000 per student for each academic year. Schools below that level do not have to register. Customs exempts Malaysian citizens holding a valid disabled persons (OKU) card, and says deposits are taxable when they form part of the payment for the service. Taylor's states that the tax applies regardless of nationality. Schools apply it differently in practice: Alice Smith exempts normal-day pre-school and says it began charging on 1 September 2025, while BSKL applies SST to all tuition.

Application fee: RM 1,000 to RM 1,800.
Enrolment, registration or admission fee: RM 5,000 at Taylor's up to RM 59,000 at ISKL, usually non-refundable.
Refundable deposit: up to RM 24,000 at Alice Smith; one term's fees at Taylor's (RM 3,500 in Early Years).
Language support: EAL at M'KIS costs RM 2,000 to RM 5,000 a semester plus SST.
Not included anywhere: buses, lunches, uniforms, trips, exam entry fees and devices.

How to budget for school fees in Kuala Lumpur

Price the whole stay, not the first year. Fees step up sharply at Year 7 or Grade 6 and again for the final years. A child joining Alice Smith in Year 5 would see tuition rise from RM 97,410 to RM 122,370 by Year 10 at today's prices, before any annual increase.

Read your employment package closely. Some companies pay fees directly, and M'KIS says it does not charge SST on admission or EAL fees when a company, embassy or organisation pays in full with the right documents. Ask HR whether the allowance covers tax, joining fees and deposits.

Watch the currency. Fees are set and paid in ringgit. If your salary is in dollars or euros, a move in the exchange rate changes your real cost, and card payments in a foreign currency can add 2.7% to 3.3% in charges at some schools.
