Bilingual Schools in Ningbo: A 2026 Guide for Expat Families

Quick answer: which bilingual schools can expat families choose in Ningbo? Ningbo has two routes. Licensed schools for foreign nationals, such as Ningbo Huamao International School and Georgia School Ningbo, teach mainly in English for roughly CNY 150,000 to 280,000 a year. Chinese-licensed bilingual schools, such as Nord Anglia School Ningbo and Ningbo HD School, teach in Mandarin and English and cost roughly CNY 90,000 to 220,000.

Choosing among the bilingual schools in Ningbo is less about finding the "best" name and more about understanding which type of school your child is legally allowed to join, and how much Chinese they will actually be taught in. Ningbo is a busy port city of about ten million people, with a smaller, more manageable school market than Shanghai.

This guide explains the difference between Chinese-English bilingual private schools and schools for children of foreign personnel, who can enrol where, how Mandarin support works in practice, and what the 2021 private education rules changed. It then reviews five schools and indicative 2026 fees.

Why Ningbo, and where families live

Ningbo draws expatriate families through manufacturing, shipping and trade: Ningbo-Zhoushan is one of the busiest ports in the world, and many foreign companies run plants in the Beilun, Zhenhai and Hangzhou Bay areas.

Yinzhou District, south of the old centre, is the most popular choice. It has newer compounds, the Southern Business District and several schools, including Huamao and HD. Jiangbei, north of the river, is quieter, with older villa compounds and easy access to the city centre; Georgia School Ningbo sits here. The National Hi-Tech Zone (Gaoxin) east of the centre is popular with engineers and tech staff, and is home to Ningbo British International School. Fenghua, further south, is greener and more spacious, and hosts the large Nord Anglia campus.

Bilingual or international? The legal difference that decides everything

In China, "international" is used loosely in marketing, but licences are strict. Schools for children of foreign personnel are licensed to serve foreign passport holders and, in most cases, residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. They can teach a fully foreign curriculum in English from age three to eighteen. Chinese-licensed private bilingual schools can enrol both Chinese and foreign children, but during compulsory education (Grades 1 to 9) they must follow the national curriculum.

The key turning point was the Implementation Regulations of the Law on the Promotion of Private Education, which came into force on 1 September 2021. They confirmed that private schools offering compulsory education cannot be controlled by foreign entities, must use nationally approved textbooks and cannot teach a foreign curriculum in place of the Chinese one. Since then, Chinese subjects taught in Mandarin form the core from Grade 1 to 9 in bilingual schools, with English layered on top. International courses such as IGCSE, A Level or AP usually appear only from Grade 10.

Curricula available in Ningbo

  • International Baccalaureate (IB): PYP, MYP and Diploma, offered in English at a school for foreign nationals.
  • American curriculum with AP: US-style college preparation, with SAT and PSAT testing on site.
  • British and Cambridge curriculum: the English National Curriculum leading to IGCSE and A Level.
  • Chinese national curriculum, bilingual model: the Ningbo K-12 syllabus taught in Mandarin and English, often blended with international teaching methods.
  • Integrated Chinese plus Cambridge pathway: national curriculum to Grade 9, then IGCSE and A Level for university entry abroad.

Five bilingual and international schools to consider in Ningbo

Ningbo Huamao International School

Located on Yinxian Avenue in Yinzhou, Huamao International School (NHIS) took its current name in 2015 when it was authorised as an international school in the region. It is linked to Huamao Foreign Languages School and the wider Huamao Educational Group, which gives it an unusual position: an English-medium IB school with deep local roots. It offers all three IB programmes (PYP, MYP and the Diploma), so a child can stay from the early years to university entry. For families who want English-first IB teaching with real contact with Chinese culture, it is often the first visit.

Georgia School Ningbo

Georgia School Ningbo (GSN), on Jiangbei Road, describes itself as the first licensed independent school for international families in the Ningbo region. It teaches an American, college-preparatory curriculum from pre-kindergarten to high school, holds full WASC accreditation and is authorised to offer Advanced Placement. Students come from more than 25 countries. Mandarin is taught as a subject, so this is an English-medium choice rather than a true bilingual one.

Ningbo British International School

NBIS sits on Guanghua Road in the National Hi-Tech Zone and follows a British and Cambridge pathway. It is a member of the Council of International Schools, an authorised Cambridge examination centre, a SAT centre and, helpfully for bilingual aims, an HSK centre for the official Chinese proficiency test. Families can use HSK levels to track Mandarin progress.

Nord Anglia School Ningbo

Nord Anglia School Ningbo, on Wenbo Road in Fenghua, is a genuine bilingual school built for up to 3,500 students aged 6 to 18. Its programme is based on the Ningbo K-12 curriculum, blended with international curriculum elements and teaching methods, and both Mandarin and English are languages of instruction. It suits children who already speak some Mandarin or will stay in China long term.

Ningbo HD School

Ningbo HD School, on Ningdong Road in Yinzhou, delivers a fully bilingual education with English and Mandarin as languages of instruction. An integrated Chinese curriculum builds language and cultural understanding, while older students sit IGCSE and A Level exams for university entry in China or abroad. Boarding is available.

Bilingual school fees in Ningbo for 2026

Schools for foreign nationals in Ningbo charge roughly CNY 150,000 to 280,000 a year, with the Diploma and final high school years at the top of the range. Chinese-licensed bilingual schools are usually cheaper, at roughly CNY 90,000 to 220,000, although international high school tracks can cost as much as a foreign-national school.

  • Application and assessment fee: non-refundable.
  • Enrolment or registration fee: a one-off payment on accepting a place.
  • Deposit: often refundable when the child leaves with notice.
  • School bus: priced by distance.
  • Meals: sometimes included, often billed per term.
  • Uniforms, trips and exam fees: IGCSE, A Level, AP and IB exam entries are charged separately.

One date to know for younger children: China's first national Preschool Education Law took effect on 1 June 2025, and from the autumn 2025 term fees for the final year of public kindergarten were waived nationwide, with fee reductions for eligible licensed private kindergartens. Ask each kindergarten how this applies to its fees.

Practical tips for choosing a bilingual school

Start with your passport, not the brochure. Confirm which licence the school holds and whether your child is eligible. A child registered as a Chinese national may not qualify for a foreign-national school, whatever other passport they hold.

Ask how Mandarin is taught, hour by hour. Request a sample timetable. A bilingual school might teach mathematics and Chinese in Mandarin every day, while an international school might offer five lessons of Mandarin a week in separate native and learner groups.

Plan the exit route. If you may move within two or three years, an IB, American or British programme transfers more smoothly. If you plan to stay, or want your child to be truly fluent, a bilingual school can give them both languages at a high level.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreign children attend a bilingual school in Ningbo?

Yes. Foreign passport holders can enrol in Chinese-licensed private bilingual schools as well as in schools for children of foreign personnel. The difference is the curriculum: in bilingual schools, Grades 1 to 9 follow the national syllabus taught partly in Mandarin, so children without some Chinese usually need extra language support in the first year.

Can Chinese nationals enrol at Ningbo's international schools?

Schools licensed for children of foreign personnel generally accept only students with a foreign passport, and in many cases Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan residents. Families with only Chinese nationality usually choose a licensed bilingual private school instead, which can then add international programmes such as IGCSE, A Level or AP from around age 15.

How much Mandarin will my child learn at a bilingual school in Ningbo?

Far more than at an English-medium international school. At bilingual schools, Mandarin is a language of instruction for core subjects, often half the timetable or more in primary and middle school. International schools usually teach Mandarin as a daily subject, with separate native and learner tracks, but everything else is taught in English.
