Hamelin-Laie International School Families Share Cultures at Potluck

BARCELONA, 19 October 2026. Families from nearly 30 countries came together at Hamelin-Laie International School for this year's International Potluck, a tradition held at the end of the first month of the academic year. The school field became a celebration of cultures, traditions and flavours from around the world.

Families prepared dishes that were meaningful to them, shared stories from home and spent the evening getting to know one another. According to the school, what stood out was not only the variety of food on offer but the conversations, laughter and connections shared across the field throughout the afternoon.

Families set up tables across the field, sharing recipes, traditions and stories from different parts of the world. Students moved from one country to the next, eager to try something new, while parents exchanged experiences, recommendations and stories about life in Barcelona.

For families who have recently joined the school, the International Potluck is often one of the first chances to connect with other parents. Starting life in a new country, or moving school, can feel both exciting and challenging, and families often tell the school how important it is to find a community that helps them settle, make friends and feel at home.

“One of the greatest strengths of Hamelin-Laie is the diversity of our community. Seeing families from nearly 30 countries come together, not only to share their traditions but also to celebrate and learn from one another, is a powerful reminder of what makes our school so special.”

Sarah Osborne-James, Head of School

The event is driven by the school's families, and the care that went into every dish made the evening feel personal. Each table reflected a family's story. For current families it was an opportunity to celebrate their heritage; for newer families, a chance to meet people and become part of the school community.

Hamelin-Laie sees these moments as part of how students learn alongside people from different backgrounds. Experiences of this kind, the school says, help children develop curiosity, empathy and respect, and understand that everyone has a story worth sharing.
