The American International School of Algiers (AISA) is a non-profit, independent and co-educational day school located on a villa campus in the quiet Ben Aknoun district of Algiers. It opened in August 2016, after roughly ten years of negotiations between the United States Embassy and the Algerian government, using funds left by an earlier American school that closed in 1990 and the library and furniture of the former American School of Tripoli. AISA states that it is the only school authorised to offer a United States curriculum in Algeria. Teaching is based on the AERO standards and US Common Core, delivered by US-licensed teachers with materials sourced from the United States, and progress is measured with NWEA MAP tests. The school welcomes children of all nationalities from age three in Pre-K and currently runs to Grade 10, after adding high school Grades 9-10 in autumn 2026; Grades 11 and 12 are to be introduced gradually to complete a full K-12 pathway. The school reports students of around 18 to 23 nationalities and a student-teacher ratio of about 8:1. Annual tuition for 2026-27 runs from USD 12,000 in the early years to USD 25,000 in high school and includes lunch, learning materials, field trips and after-school activities.

School values

AISA's mission, adopted by its board in 2016, is to pursue academic excellence through an American-based education that develops responsible, respectful and globally aware lifelong learners while encouraging friendship and exchange. The school promotes six traits across the community: being compassionate, cooperative, ethical, independent, respectful and responsible. Each month focuses on one trait, and students and teachers who show these values are recognised on a Tree of Traits board.
