About Yokohama International School (YIS)
Yokohama International School (YIS) is a great place to learn and grow. We are proud of our heritage, beginning in 1924, as part of Yokohama's development as an international hub of commerce and industry and of the reputation that YIS enjoys as a school with passionate and dedicated educators. We are driven to keep YIS at the forefront of international education while still maintaining its small school feel and strong sense of community and culture.
Everything that happens in the school is based upon a strong sense of values, guided by our mission - Live Learn Lead. These, and an increasing emphasis on service learning, act as a guide in all that we do and go a lot deeper than just words on the page. YIS students have huge opportunities to explore, develop and challenge themselves within a caring and exciting learning environment, and we aim to help them take advantage of everything that is on offer. In my experience, the students (and indeed the families) who get involved in school life and all that it has to offer are the ones who benefit the most and are most successful. Located in the heart of the historic Bluff district across from Harbor View Park, YIS offers a safe and green environment near some of Yokohama's most pleasant residential neighborhoods.
It is also very convenient for families who choose to live in Tokyo – just over 30 minutes away by express train – and a great number of our students commute to school everyday, with the nearest station only 5 minutes walk away from our front gate.

How would you rate Yokohama International School (YIS)?
The worst school we've ever experienced. The leadership team is horrible.
The campus move is happening in a few weeks and the facility will be much better. My husband and our YIS friends feel that the quality of education has gone down in the past years. We are embarrassed to see some high school students wearing inappropriate attire for school. Hopefully this will change...?? Maybe the generation has changed as we see many teachers with tattoes. Hope to see changes in the new campus for our children.

I have been attending this school since kindergarten and have felt nothing but love and pride for YIS. Ever since I was little, I woke up everyday excited to go to school to see my friends and teachers. As a happy and overall positive kid, I used to tell my Mom "school is better than Disney land!" Although I am in high school now and school can be hard because of the academics and regular teenage pressures, I still mean what I said. The never ending support and kindness from all my teachers helps me stay motivated and encourages me to improve myself to be a better person. During online learning (because of the pandemic) the school continuously checked in on students about our mental health and provided a strong support system for those who were struggling. With active teachers, me and many other students felt well supported and understood. Now that we are back on campus, the school has navigated covid-19 precautions very well and made school feel safe enough and comfortable. Overall, I love my school and wish every kid could have the opportunity to receive the same positive experience in school as me. It honestly feels like a privilege and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to attend YIS. I understand that some reviews suggest otherwise, and they are entitled to their opinion, however, based on their statements, they seem irrational, untrue, and for the purpose of revenge for individual reasons such as being expelled for poor choices. I hope this review will give parents who want their kids to be happy in school more personal and accurate insights about what it's really like to be a proud dragon.
