About The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL)

Established in 1965, The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) has become known as a center of excellence in the world of international education. ISKL is a co-educational, private, non-profit school responsible for the learning journey of over 1,600 students aged 3-18 years representing more than 65 nationalities at its campus in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

ISKL offers a robust international curriculum which combines leading North American educational frameworks with global best practice. The curriculum recognizes that students are on a lifelong learning journey and is driven by ISKL’s purpose to prepare our students for life itself, as we believe in the importance of helping students to shape their own paths, supporting them in discovering their passions, developing their competencies, and having an ethical impact on the world.

ISKL is the longest-running IB World School in Malaysia and has been authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to provide the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) since 1989. In August 2020, two new innovative High School curriculum options, PRAXIS and Pursuits Program were introduced. Both focus on enhancing student agency and self-directed learning.

ISKL is also the only school in Malaysia to offer this range of high-quality, transdisciplinary pathways which enable every learner to choose the curriculum best suited to their abilities, interests, and aspirations. Options available include PRAXIS (for Grade 9 students), Pursuits Program, the full IB Diploma, or a student-selected combination of individual IB, Advanced Placement, and High School Diploma courses. This flexibility creates global further education opportunities with ISKL’s students receiving acceptances from leading universities worldwide.

ISKL is accredited internationally through the Council of International Schools (CIS), and in the United States through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). ISKL has a strong focus on service and sustainability across its divisions and is a member of the Eco-Schools organization and the Green Schools Alliance.

I was at ISKL for 3 years from 2008 and they were the best school years I had. I wish I was there still :(

I have four children -- each of them completely different and each of them have found what they need at ISKL. My elementary children are happy to head out in the morning and arrive home in the afternoon with tired brains and bodies. Their teachers are all lovely, caring people who want to be right where they are: mentoring young people in a first class facility. ISKL resources are amazing - they nurture my childrens' academic, mental, and physical health. I was nervous about my middle school son's mid-year transition from a small class at a small school to a larger environment. I have seen him challenged and accept those challenges with very little additional parental cheerleading. He is excited about learning and he is full of positive energy. ISKL asks our children to engage with the world around them and teaches them the empathy, knowledge, and ambition necessary to become thoughtful, compassionate leaders.

We have just started our 2nd year in Kuala Lumpur and at ISKL. Our child is currently in Grade 7. We moved to KL and began ISKL in her first year of Middle School and for our first expat experience. According to her this move was ruining her life and she hated the idea of going! We arrived in KL three days before the start of school so we basically just jumped right into KL life and ISKL and did not know another parent or student. By the second week of school, our child let us know that she NEVER wanted to leave ISKL and that she wanted to graduate HS from ISKL - she never wants to leave! The school, staff, teachers and students made this feel like an instant home for her. She has continued to do well academically but her maturity, self-confidence and global consciousness have increased greatly! As parents we are very happy also - we would not want our child at another school. The caliber of teachers and administrative staff is amazing and they are constantly striving to do better on a daily basis. It is a very special place and we are so grateful to have this opportunity to be a part of the ISKL community!

Attending this school was the best academic experience I've ever had. I am grateful for the three years I've been a part of this community, because I'm truly benefited as a person. My physical education teacher this year(in 7th grade) encouraged me and motivated me to improve my fitness, and in 6 months, I went from a below average student to an above average student(for ex. 35 to 62 in pacer & 3:30 sec plank). However I didn't just improve the scores, but I gained a new love for fitness and PE. My French teacher saw elegance, intelligence and brilliance in me when I kept doubting myself. My humanities pushed me from the start because she saw potential in me, and I ended up pushing myself because I already excelled. All of my teachers at iskl were amazing, but so were the students. Everyone has atleast one friend. I never noticed a single student in the school who had no friends. I was in an awesome 11 person group of close friends. If you go to ISKL, you will likely find yourself in a friendship group. Bullying was never a problem for me neither is it a problem for most people in this school, because we are constantly reminded and taught to be great people. Additionally, ISKL cares about the problems taking place in the world, and regularly plan days/events like TAG days and Middle school dances 4 times a year to raise money for developing disease research centers in poor countries, and animal shelters like the SPCA. If you want to help the world, learn and improve in all ways while having fun (and a teeny little bit of stress and anxiety), join this school. Last but not least, in this school I got to go on a few memorable, even LIFE changing field trips. Malacca, Ipoh, basically all the beautiful locations in Malaysia. Though the field trips that opened my eyes to the screaming beauty of nature.. were the Malaysia week trips. You have say in where you go, and you get to go to a beautiful location for a week, and dedicate your focus to nature. One week of adventure, exploration, new experiences, persevering and pure beauty. If my giant review hasn't convinced anyone who's interested in attending ISKL that they/you should, I don't know what will. Sincerely, Liv Jayasinghe P.S. This is basically my goodbye letter to ISKL (I'm in New York now)
