About The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST)

Situated in the heart of Tokyo, The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST) is a well-established and internationally-minded Montessori school offering a vibrant vision of education for your child. MST was the first accredited Montessori school in Asia and is home to a diverse and highly qualified faculty and staff, drawn from all around the globe. Our facility comprises spacious classrooms, a beautiful garden and various other modern facilities that our community of learners call home.

At MST, learning is recognised as a natural ongoing process, unique to each person. Learning occurs in different ways and at a different pace for each individual and doesn’t fit anyone else’s predetermined schedule or timeline. At MST, learning is seen as a process of individual development and self-construction that leads to the fullest development of human potential. A successful MST student will discover their passions and their place in the world, while developing a love of peace and a deep respect for mankind and our planet.

As Maria Montessori herself said 'It is the child who makes the man, and no man exists who was not made by the child he once was'.

The husband and wife team who run The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST), Pete Juds and Mariko Maeda, met while studying at the Maria Montessori Training Organisation in London, UK. After returning to Tokyo in 1989, Mariko began running a Montessori class at her Alma Mater, Seisen International School. Within a couple of years, Pete had joined her in Tokyo and in 1993, he started the Sunshine Montessori School for 2-6 year olds. Mariko left Seisen in 1997 and founded the Little People Montessori School for 2-4 year olds. The Sunshine Montessori School soon expanded with the opening of a second classroom. With continued interest and requests to expand, Pete, together with a business partner, founded the first Montessori elementary school in Japan in 2003. Now renamed The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST),  it was located on a separate campus, together with a new toddler class.  At the same time, Mariko closed the Little People school and joined the MST administration team. The first year saw rapid growth and the elementary class (which included Pete and Mariko’s own 2 children) quickly grew to over 20 students. After a year, the school secured a single campus in the attractive area of Minami Azabu. While able to house all programmes, the campus is close to a number of local parks and large enough to accommodate future growth. In 2011, the campus was further enhanced by the addition of a large garden in the back, giving the children easy access to a natural outdoor area. September 2014 saw the addition of a Middle School class for students 12–14 years old. MST acquired the use of a second building, The Annex, to house this programme along with the Little People classroom. An Art and Design space was added to the main building, further adding to the experiential learning opportunities for the students. Having existed as a 3-6 year old school for 10 years and a toddler through elementary age school for a further 11 years, MST continues into its third decade, now catering to children from 2-15 years old. We look forward to continuing to provide an authentic Montessori experience to all families in the community, while honouring our core values of confidence, respect and compassion.
