As parents of two boys through DSL from Kindergarten to Abitur, we want to share what makes this school exceptional. DSL offers German education from age 3 to 19 (and now in combination with Sudbrook nursery starting at 6 months), with 890 students representing 52 nationalities. This year the school achieved an Abitur average of 1.98—significantly above Germany's national average. Pupils can pursue Abitur, International Baccalaureate, Fachabitur, or Realschulabschluss, giving real flexibility as families' needs change. As a German Auslandsschule, DS... DSL offers German education from age 3 to 19 (and now in combination with Sudbrook nursery starting at 6 months), with 890 students representing 52 nationalities. This year the school achieved an Abitur average of 1.98—significantly above Germany's national average. Pupils can pursue Abitur, International Baccalaureate, Fachabitur, or Realschulabschluss, giving real flexibility as families' needs change. As a German Auslandsschule, DSL is part of a network of 135 schools abroad, so education continues seamlessly if families move. To become a secondary teacher in Germany, you typically study 4–5 years, followed by compulsory practical on-the-job training, lasting another 1.5 years. Therefore, teachers in Germany are highly trained professionals, and those selected to teach at German schools abroad often have to comply with strict selection criteria, such as minimum years of post-grad experience and excellent performance. In our experience, they are also genuinely invested in students as individuals. Both our boys have had teachers who challenged them, knew them, and supported them throughout their whole school career. When my oldest had Abitur, his primary school teacher wrote to the whole class to wish them all the best. The "Building Bridges" careers and study advisory program is exceptional. Our oldest had substantive conversations about university options and now feels confident in his choice. The school actively connects pupils with UK, German, and international universities, and hosts career fairs with employers. In Year 10, pupils do an internship or work experience, which is helpful in finding out their interests and advising them on future choices for courses and Abitur. What the school is not, however, is a "cheap UK private school". It is distinctly German and German is the language in which pupils are instructed and tested. Whilst many multi-lingual children—they all speak at least two languages fluently, many speak 3–4—irrespective of their background, do very well, the school is not suited to every pupil. I'd encourage you to visit an open day. Speaking to current families—and pupils!—will give you the most accurate picture.

Avoid at all costs. The quality of the teachers and the instruction has gone down massively in recent years particularly in the higher year groups. Many teachers are quite hostile and defensive; lots of parents and kids we know want to leave.

Fantastic school! High academic expectations, amazing pastoral care, very supportive teachers, very friendly atmosphere. Huge gym, brand new high tech science block and large grounds. My kids transferred from a top British secondary and could not believe their luck. Very strong leadership. The school manages the lockdown extremely well. Excellent online learning provision and pastoral care.
