Your child should leave school knowing who they are, what they want from life, and prepared to face whatever comes next. Not just with grades and exam results.

Learnlife is a group of international schools where children aged 6 to 18 discover who they are, take charge of their learning and gain the skills they actually need.

Established in 2017, we have three schools in Barcelona, Castelldefels and Sitges/Sant Pere de Ribes. Our growing community is for families who want more than a traditional school. A place where children love learning, grow in confidence, and build the skills to thrive in a world that keeps changing.

We do this through a competency model built on personal learning, real-world application and positive relationships. Every child has a dedicated mentor, follows their own learning plan, and learns through real-world projects tied to their passions. Children learn in mixed-age groups, take ownership of their progress, and are celebrated as individuals.

Core academics are, of course, a given, with areas like literacy, numeracy, languages and science included in weekly schedules.

This is a proven model based on years of research and best practice. All three schools (hubs) are accredited by NEASC, meaning they are recognised worldwide and that children can earn the American High School diploma upon graduation. Learners at our Urban Hub in Barcelona can also qualify for the ESO.

Our approach is recognised as a global leading education innovation. We've received recognition from HundrED, OECD and Montessori Global and have featured in Forbes and Wired. We've also trained over 600 teachers in other schools worldwide, so everything we do has been tested in real classrooms, including our own for the past 8 years.

Our graduates go on to top universities across Europe, the US and beyond. Others start businesses or step straight into work doing something they love. What connects them is simple. They know themselves, and they're confident about what comes next.

We have three hubs across Barcelona, each with its own character.

Urban Hub (ages 12 to 18), Eixample, central Barcelona. Our first hub, opened in 2017. Studio-based, hands-on learning where purpose meets passion. Learners tackle real projects and work in creative studios alongside our learning guides and industry experts. This is where teenagers turn their interests into real-world skills while developing core competencies and academics.

Eco Hub (ages 6 to 12), Castelldefels, on the beach. Opened in 2021, the Eco Hub sits on the beachfront next to a pine forest just south of Barcelona. Learning happens indoors and outdoors, with nature and sustainability woven through the day. For younger children, joy and curiosity come first, and the setting makes that easy.

Village Hub (ages 10 to 16), Sant Pere de Ribes, near Sitges. Our newest hub, opened in 2024. Learning is connected to the local community, with a focus on social entrepreneurship and studio-based learning.

Educational principles

Learning works best when a child wants to learn and enjoys learning. That belief sits underneath everything we do.

Traditional education is built on control: timetables, standard subjects, the same path for everyone. We build on agency instead. Children make real choices about how they learn, with structure and support around them. The structure serves the child rather than boxing them in.

A few principles guide the day:

  1. Personal to each child. Every child has a learning plan shaped around who they are and where they want to go.
  2. Relationships first. A child learns when they feel safe, seen and supported. Belonging comes before everything else.
  3. Real over abstract. Learning is tied to real projects and real-world challenges, so it means something.
  4. Ownership. Children learn to take charge of their own learning, which is the skill that lasts a lifetime.
  5. Mastery over age. Children progress when they're ready, based on what they've actually learned, not just their birthday.

School values

Five values shape our community. They're the aspiration for everyone, the adults as much as the children, and they show up in how we work together every day.

  1. Positive relationships. Every child is genuinely known. Relationships come first, because a child learns best when they feel safe and seen. One-to-one mentoring sits at the centre of daily life.
  2. Empathetic collaboration. We work alongside one another with real regard, and we read behaviour as communication rather than character. Our community agreements are made together and revisited together. Respect is the shared norm, so bullying has no place to take root.
  3. Growth through adventure. Real learning comes from curiosity, considered risk and making something real, rather than covering content for a test. Children move from a personal interest to a contribution they can share with others.
  4. Fair communities. Every child has standing, a voice and equal access, whatever their background or starting point. The social contract is built together, not handed down.
  5. Authentic trust. Trust is given freely rather than earned through compliance. It's the foundation the whole community stands on.

None of the five stands alone. Together, they create a positive and supportive learning culture in which your child can thrive.

Information about the school-family relationship

Learnlife is a community. Families comprise over 30 nationalities across the three hubs, with roughly 70% international and 30% Spanish. This mix means children learn about and grow up alongside different cultures, languages and perspectives.

Parents are heavily involved in our schools through our Parent Hub, community events and sharing their skills and experiences with our learners. We welcome feedback and hold regular parent coffees. The parent community is a place to connect with other families, share the journey, and feel part of something bigger than a school.

Many parents tell us the same thing once they've settled in. Their child is happier, more confident, and actually enjoys going to school. And they've found a group of like-minded families who want the same things for their children.

Information about the educational stages of the Learnlife Barcelona

We welcome children from ages 6 (age 5 if they turn 6 before the end of the new year) through 18 in small mixed-age groups that feel more like real life than a row of desks.

  1. Primary (ages 6 to 12). Adventurers, Discoverers and Pioneers learn numeracy, literacy, languages, humanities and science through hands-on, project-based learning. The focus is on keeping a love of learning alive while building strong foundations.
  2. Secondary (ages 12 to 18). Explorers, Creators and Changemakers go deeper through studios, passion projects and real-world challenges, while preparing for the qualifications and pathways that come next.

There are no traditional exams or grades. Instead, children show what they've learned through:

  1. Learning Vitae - A living, dynamic tool, similar to a portfolio, that offers a holistic view of each learner's growth. It provides clear insights into where learners are in their journey and includes evidence of their achievements.
  2. 360 assessments - Learners reflect, share their growth and receive feedback on their learning by presenting to their parents and mentor at the end of each cycle (term).
  3. Showcases - A celebration where learners present their best work to the whole community and answer questions about their learning in a market-style format. It's honest, personal, and moving to experience.

Languages and International Programs at Learnlife Barcelona

Spanish Spanish (Half)
English English (Instructional)
Catalan Catalan (Half)

Information about languages of the Learnlife Barcelona

English is the main language of learning across all three hubs, so international families settle in quickly. Spanish and Catalan are part of the day too, taught and spoken naturally by a multilingual team of Learning Guides.

We also value a child's home, or heart, language. Children can often work and express their ideas in the language they feel most themselves in, then share that learning with the wider community. The aim is simple: children who feel confident in more than one language, and proud of where they come from.

Information about international degrees and programmes of the Learnlife Barcelona

Learnlife runs its own learning model built around personal learning plans and competencies, rather than a single fixed curriculum. It's closest to the American curriculum and aligns with the local Ministry of Education standards.

All learners can gain the American High School diploma. At the Urban Hub, learners can also obtain the ESO. We also offer Advanced Placement courses to help learners progress to their chosen destination.

  1. NEASC accreditation (all three hubs). Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the international accrediting body. This recognises our learning design and assessment, not just our buildings.
  2. American High School Diploma. Qualifying secondary graduates at schools can earn the American High School Diploma, recognised internationally.
  3. Spanish recognition (ESO and Bachillerato). At the Urban Hub, qualifying learners' transcripts are homologated by the Spanish Ministry of Education: Explorers and Creators to ESO, and Changemakers to Bachillerato.
  4. Advanced Placements. We offer a range of AP courses for learners that are confirmed each year.
  5. Pathways support. Each learner's mentor helps them plan for university, vocational training, a gap year, work or starting a business, supported by their Learning Vitae, a living portfolio of who they are and what they can do.

Local Spanish accreditation is fully in place at the Urban Hub. We expect this at the Eco and Village Hubs in 2027.

Information about extracurricular activities of the Learnlife Barcelona

Extracurricular activities are organised by parents for our primary-aged learners at the Eco Hub in Castelldefels.

We don't run extracurricular clubs for our secondary programmes, and that's a deliberate choice.

We want children to be part of their own local community outside hub hours. Many of our learners play for sports clubs, train in music or dance, or pursue their own interests in the towns where they live. We think that's healthy. It keeps children rooted in their neighbourhood and connected to friends beyond Learnlife.

During the day, our focus stays on personal learning and passion projects, so the hours children spend with us count.

I had never imagined that I would see my child grow so much in terms of self-confidence and willingness to try new things in just one short year. They have had support and encouragement to dive more deeply into the things they love, like writing, while discovering passions for creating with textiles and overcoming a deep-seated fear of maths. The 360º reflection process at the end of each cycle is incredibly meaningful and allows learners and their families to see such a complete and beautiful picture of where their child is in their journey and wha...

Working at learnlife you really get to see passions evolving, learners are given the reins in their own decision making and autonomy with support throughout and guidance. Ultimately this provides a space where a natural community grows, creative studios blossom and collaboration is key. Many learners have found their true self esteem through this space and I'm excited to see what comes next.

A wonderful, innovative and fun approach to learning. I work with an incredibly kind, inclusive and supportive team who help our young people to explore how they learn best. This is a very special learning community with an individualised, holistic approach to learning.

It is almost hard to imagine that a school like this exists. A school where your kids are happy and inspired and where they are actually learning useful things for their life after school. A 21st century school where they learn 21 century skills. Guides and students inspire each other to great heights. It is amazing to be part of this movement.

Great place for kids to learn the skills they need for creative problem solving and other necessary skills for the future.
