My husband worked at Dulwich Puxi high school and my kid went to the primary school as an employee benefit. Shortly after a formal diagnose of ASD/ADHD, school went online in December. After coming back from a lengthy winter break, we attended my son's IEP meeting and was informed that my son can not continue his enrollment for the next year. Decision was final and non-negotiable. In April, the school decided my son cannot take a science CCA offered by "Mad Science" because of "risk assessment", after being approved of enrollment and the kid all prepared. As a school administrator myself, I thought it was a joke. Science and math are the strength areas and the golden principle of supporting a kid with needs is to boost confidence through opportunities in strength areas. Nope, they are damn serious. The principal even went out of her way to prevent the kid from taking a trial lesson offered by Mad Science. My son has attended main stream bilingual schools since kindergarten with some issues but manageable. All Chinese teachers soon identified his talent in math and sciences and supported him. He was happy, confident and enjoyed school. He has excellent memory and learned a lot of academic vocabulary in English and many Chinese characters before we realize. He learned 1-3rd grade math himself with online classes during the 2-month lockdown in Shanghai and finished a Year 3 (2nd grade) test in 7 minutes with 100% correction at Dulwich. Dulwich placed him in Year 2 (1st grade). According to CDC research, 1 in 6 kids these days are identified with learning needs. Public schools and most private schools in western countries are supporting these students. Schools designed for academically gifted and talented students often see a high ratio of students with ADHD. We transferred my son from local bilingual school to Dulwich with the belief that it will provide better education for him. Yet we were completely let down. The administration puts a lot of effort on obtaining fancy certifications and fundraising, but fundamentally they don't have faith in the kids they work with. Math and science curriculum standards are much lower than a typical bilingual school. My husband sometimes will give 6th grade math worksheet to the kid and he often quickly find a way through. Despite the school celebrates receiving a "Diversity and Inclusion Award", "it is only the media's opinion," the Board Director commented, "we are not an inclusive school." Parents and students' rights in local schools, public or private, are strictly protected by law. Unfortunately neither the Chinese education laws or the international laws apply to these "International Schools in China". We moved back to the US in the summer, but what choices do you have if your beloved child is facing a similar situation?

My daughter has been in the school for over 2 years. She is fully engaged and her academic progress has been excellent. The campus is beautiful and lots of opportunity for outdoor play.
