Top 10 International Schools in Singapore

About Singapore

Singapore has over 5.5 million people crammed into 7,800 square kilometres making it the second most densely populated country on the planet. Despite that, for the majority the quality of life is high, crime and taxes are very low. Since independence in 1965 it has been ruled by the same party which has presided over astonishing growth into one of the most important trade and financial centres in the world.

For a lot of people, Changi Airport will be the only experience of Singapore as they pass through onto another destination. It represents a lot of what Singapore is: modern, clean, well-organised and very comfortable. And one thing that Changi shares with the rest of modern Singapore - good air-conditioning! If you spend any time travelling and working in Singapore you are likely to experience moving from the intense heat of the outside to the over-air-conditioned inside of offices and shops. You end up needing a jumper or coat to survive the inside world!

Language

Singapore has four official languages: Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, and English. For many expats, English being one of the official languages makes life much more straight-forward and has no doubt played a part in helping Singapore become such an accessible part of Asia. It is the main language used in schools which means almost all locals can speak two languages - their mother tongue and English.

One last language you might not know about is Singlish - it’s the mix of English with a jumble of locally spoken languages and slang…the end result is…well, it’s like this! To really integrate into Singaporean life you might have to put it on the list of things to learn but you can survive with plain old English otherwise!
